Warhawk knows how to evaluate kayaks and one idea that I'd would also mention is to go out and demo some different makes and models and develop a list of "kayaks I'd like to own." Dealers have demo days and friends will swap out at lakes to compare kayaks.
Then, watch and be ready to jump fast when one hits the market. I have seen some extremely attractive deals. I saw a Propel 10 one time that was priced so cheap, I thought it might have been the one stolen from Rick's store in FW so I called him to see if it was the same boat; it wasn't.
As discussed many times here, you know how our mothers used to say "your eyes are bigger than your stomach" when we plated up more food, what we thought we could eat, then left half un-eaten. This is the same way with boats and kayaks where people buy them with all of these visions of being out on the water . . . then reality sets in. So, some really nice equipment is often used sparingly, maybe just 3 or 4 times out on the water, if that, and it is then summarily sold.
How cheap? I'd say in many cases, you might find something for well less than 50 cents on the dollar. And, not 50% of retail, but 50% of actual secondary market values.
