I like 50lb braid with at least a 3/4 oz tungsten weight and tungsten bead because it makes a good clacking noise especially on wood and rock. I Like to use a swivel to reduce line twisting and usually no longer than a 48" (usually about 36") fluorocarbon leader. I have noticed that anything more than 20 lbs. on the leader pops more knots on that short of a line so I just use 15 lb test and it works great.

I use the Carolina keepers they have out just slide your weight on your line and 2 glass beads get a pair of needle nose slide two Carolina keepers up your line using the needle nose the keepers have slits in them to slide on your line you can slide it up and down with your needle nose to what ever length you want your leader don't slide them with out the needle nose it will fray your line then tie on your hook and your done works great and a lot faster for re ties and adjusting your leader lengths!!

No braid.
20 lbs. floro main line. Swivel, bead, weight. About a 3 to 6 ft. leader. I use 14 lbs. floro on my leader.
1 oz. weight deep, 1/2 oz. shallower than 15 ft. +1

20# Big Game an main line and 12# or 15# Big Game as leader so the bait floats more off of the bottom, Floro sinks which is why I choose not to use it as a leader.

Should I set up my Carolina rig on my baitcast or spinning rod? I use a 4000 reel with a 7' med-hvy, works fine...

I love this way to rig it. Simple, one knot, use line of choice(except possibly fluoro), vary leader length. I just bait cast everything- spinning rig- noooo-yuck. This is Texas. I'm just kidding about spinning rig- I know a lot of you guys are masters of that rig and catch large stringers using it, but I just think baitcast and at least 7 ft mod heavy action rod that is parabolic action for crig.

20 lb big game, no leader, carolina keeper. Catches me a ton of fish. If you like fluoro don't use a keeper, it will break. The big game holds up to it and is the best setup for me. I don't like trusting 3 different knots and I feel like it's a more straight line connection to the fish without the leader.

You can pause and all that, but you will cover more water if you simply use a heavier weight (3/4 to 1 oz),point to the bait and simply reel in. You feel every rock, stick or bush, Don't use a sweeping motion, then reel down to it to take the slack out, just keep a slow steady reel going. You will catch more fish this way 90 % of the time. There are times when you just need to pause and see if they are just following it, that's when it kind of floats up in their face and they can't resist it. If that is how they start biting, go to a drop shot. If there is lots of grass, you have to go to a light weight and slow down. If you don't believe me, the next time two of you are fishing together, one of you fish with the constant reel, the other pause and wind and pause and see which one catches more fish. And this is why I love this forum. Although I don't bass fish extensively, I still do some picking at it. When I've used carolina rigs, it's the sweep & reel method because that's what I learned as a kid. Never thought to do it the way you're describing. Will try that next time.

I use big game the vast majority of the time.
