Let me fist say, love the idea and your execution.
How accurate is it compared to other units? I find my android GPS sometimes isn't showing exactly where I am when in my car.... I guess if I wanted to I could attach it to my wifi hotspot on my phone and get even more accurate but I would say it was within 3-5 feet accurate. if not more.. without wifi so maybe even more if it was? Not sure I'll double check next time I am on the water. @Fishbonz, jackwabbit, lipjerk, Jpmachala,Jbarker93,Jpmachala Thanks guys @J.P. Greeson - I thought about a lifeproof case it made sense but the mount that I am using doesn't really fit any kind of case...so I am looking more for a sleeve than a case. @Nic Jones - I'll check into that, sounds like I would have to upgrade again..but that may be a great next step. Thanks. @bogey - I had no problems reading it during the day on Lake Fork in the sunniest of conditions or when my boat was sinking....I'll leave that story for another day (special thanks to Rusty by the golf course for checking on me and my dad)... you do have to turn the brightness up during the day but other than that it works great. I can see it from the front of the boat as well. @D Miner - There are a lot of tablet makers out there, I just put samsung because that worked for me. I didn't have any brightness issues with this unit. @Matt Jackson - That sounds really good, unfortunately for me and maybe some others, getting a nice head unit with all the fancy features may be too much $$$ my goal was to show a cost effective way of having a nice, large navigation unit mounted on the boat without breaking the bank....but it's great to know these new units come with bluetooth and wifi to add on, I think I might go crazy and add like 3 or 4 screens..where I wouldn't even be able to see over the front of the boat...I take things to the extreme sometimes... I'd probably have to drive my boat standing up... @Jpurdue Don't dare me to put a 60'inch flat screen on my boat.... I just might...

I got an Gen3 that you can link an to an Ipad. I had done it once before since I don't have a front unit. Tried it the other day and lasted about 20 min before the Ipad over heated and shut down.

I can buy a 60" LED TV with WIFI, Bluetooth, and basically a computer in it for under 1000 bucks. However, it cost 3k for a 12" fish finder? I've never understood that math. I can't wait for fish finders to go to the way of most other electronics and finally start to drop in price. It's gotten absurd. Agreed, much like boat prices, but, people keep buying them...

I actually used to have a similar setup in the dash of my 2012 FX20...I removed the 998 and used a lifeproof case and lifeproof cradle to mount the unit to the hole previously cut for the HB 998. It worked great! I was worried about a glare but wasnt an issue at all, not only was it great for the mapping but also listening to music when making a long run. The lifeproof case took care of the weather elements, but the only problem I had was in the summer the unit did get a little hot, not very often but every once in a while it would get too hot, but would normally come back on within 5 minutes. This only happened maybe 5-6 times while running it all year, I just started sitting a towel over the screen while I was up front fishing and never had the issue again. Also now you can run a Vexilar Sonar phone transducer and have split screen sonar and mapping on the tablet...check it out... http://www.sonarphone.mobi/

Raymarine's Dragonfly Pro line has built in wi-fi. I use it with my mini iPad so I can sit at my console and see both the bow mount and stern mount graphs at the same time while trolling.

Do you use the Thru Hull design? Im curious how well it works and if that will save me money in transducers in the long run. Already lost one on the trolling motor...a stick pulled the cable out of the transducer.. Thanks

I have been trying to decide what to do with the old flasher hole in the dash. After seeing your post, I'm now looking at fabbing a plate which would hold a ram mount base. Picked up an older Galaxy tab on the cheap. If it runs navionics OK, I'll finish out the idea and have a 10" navigation screen. Tab should be here soon for testing.
Thanks for sharing the idea!
