I hate to be a d!ck......but schooling for children should be on the parent(s) or legal guardian. Regardless of income.

"I guess my point of view is none of those programs, pre-k or whatever, have shown any educational benefit to children in any demographic."
That is incorrect. A number of studies show short-term to long-term benefits.

My wife and I both teach in the same district, and our kid won't be able to go to the preschool in our district because teacher pay makes us ineligible.
The district I used to work for had a pre-k class for teachers' kids only and would also have a bus that took them and dropped them off to the campus their parent worked at when the day was over.

Low income families get to send their children to Pre-K for free, Pre-k that is paid for by our tax dollars. So since you make to much, it only makes sense that we have to pay for day care or private school instead. What an f'd up system.

That is incorrect. A number of studies show short-term to long-term benefits. You're right. Some studies do show that SOME programs work better than others. Here's a quote from the American Enterprise Institute that says well what I think we need. "Advance high-quality child care and voluntary home visiting for disadvantaged children. Our current knowledge base does not justify a large expansion of pre-K as the best path forward. Instead, the leading science and strongest research indicate that advancing high-quality, educational child care and supporting parents in better fulfilling their role as their childrens first teachers are the most practical and promising avenues to help the children and families most in need. The growing pre-K push may well do more harm than good by diverting attention and scarce resources from other, more effective approaches.

My kid has never been to pre k and he starts kindergarten this August and guess what he can already pass kindergarten and is working on first grade stuff. But I work with him every day. So I guess I'm pre k. More parents to be involved instead of sending the kids off using up the tax dollars.

If pre pre,pre kindergarten, and kindergarten as so great at getting kids ready for grade schools, how come our public schools and colleges graduate some of the dumbest, ill informed, under educated, no common sense kids in the world? School is an opportunity rather than a guaranteed outcome. People from all over the world come to our colleges and universities, so they must not be too bad. I agree with Ted .....wow

I don't know about pre K's, but the Early Education Center we have sent both are kids to at our church has been great for them in learning extra stuff from what we teach, building on things like chapel and music, and building social skills they might not have if they don't have a sibling close in age. And we know many teachers at our kids elementary school who all say kids who come in from our church's program have a head start.

Yes Ted and Tiltman.. we are given an education for free (minus the school taxes each year)... and what we choose to do with that education afterwards (college, trade school) is up to the individual. get busy living or get busy dying. I've been to community college twice... once for and Associates in Automotive (turned wrenches for 12 years as an ASE Master Tech), got burnt out on that ish, went back for another Associates in Radiologic Science and now do CT and Xrays..... point being: we make the choice to move forward.
to the OP: I dont feel preK is really necessary if you spend the time with the child at home going over the basic stuff they do in preK. teach them numbers and the alphabet, and word associations.

My nephew is in Pre-K now. My understanding is that it's not necessarily intended to be educational. It's mostly to get the kids into the school routine and teach them how to socialize/behave properly in the classroom.
