Also in order to by a Carrier you have to have a contract stating you are going to sell X amount of units with them in a year if not all you can buy is Payne or Bryant. As far as cost goes it seems a little high if he still has to have it installed and if it is a dry R22 unit he got screwed.
What do you mean a dry R22 unit?

The unit it's replacing is a 12 year old Lennox that was installed with the house in 2005. I don't know what type of refrigerant they were using back then.

Yes, it is a 14 SEER unit. What would be a fair price for that unit?

Thanks. Didn't know if Bryant was really the same overall quality as Carrier or totally different. Sounds like it's in the same ballpark.

Johnstone is NOT a York dealer they are Coleman and Goodman. Johnson Supply was a York dealer for 20+ years. Now Century is the York dealer. Johnson Supply is Armstrong and Ducane dealer.

I had 3 condensers and compressors replaced last summer. American Standard 16 SEER. The condensers were around $2800 ea, and the compressors were about $3500.

Your buddy's quote sounds high for what he is getting.

You got the whole inside/outside replaced for 2500 or you got the new condenser for 2500? I got a quote for a 3.5 ton for 5500 installed. I'm not in the A/C biz and my borther isn't an A/C repair guy either.

You getting special pricing somehow?

Did yours come with a new furnace also?

Condenser was $2800 each for you and he is getting quoted at $2500. Why does his seem high? Just wondering - honest question.

Goodman is really low-end stuff. Not surprised you could get an entire unit replaced for $2500, although that is a good price for a 4-ton Goodman IMHO. I've heard of 3-ton Goodmans in that price range.

They're actually fairly reliable for the money, but they are in a totally different price bracket than everything else.

Your $5500 quote for a 3.5 ton was not a Goodman I assume?

Main reason I asked was that I didn't know much about pricing for just the condenser and didn't know much about pricing for Bryant. I have a slightly larger knowledge base on other brands and full replacements.

Yes mine was higher, but it is a matter of what you get for the dollar. American Standard is one of the Cadillacs in the AC world, vs. Bryant that is probably a lower tier 2 or tier 3. Plus the SEER rating makes a huge difference in how the unit performs and what your electric bill will be.

Regardless of the brand of AC, if your buddy can spend $300 more to go from a 13/14 SEER to a 16 SEER then do it. It will pay for itself by the end of the summer, much less the life of the unit.

it seems high because the compressor is normally located inside the condensing unit, 2800 plus 3500 is a lot of money , I think you meant something else, maybe the inside unit was one price & the outside unit was the other ? confused

A dry 22 unit is a condenser that is made for R22 but comes without any refrigerant in the condenser as units with R22 in them can not be sold. These units are real hard to find at this time. There is a good chance that the refrigerant in the old unit was/is 410a.

As far as American Standard is considered all it is is a Trane unit that is made under the American Standard name and sold by supply houses other than Trane. Good units but have their issues just like every other brand.

As far as Goodman is concerned it is now own by a company called Dykin which is now the largest A/C company in the world. Goodman has always had a bad name due to they sold to anyone and over the internet. Therefore due to the install most of the times the units didn't work as they should or as long and there is no warranty when bought over the internet.
