So I am leaning toward doing this on my spinning rods, what is the best knot to tie the leader to braid? I see the mention of the alberto knot, any other suggestions.

On 6 out of my 8 main setups I use braid with the option to put on whatever leader I choose. 3 spinning and 3 bait casting. The other two are bait casters with 100% fluro. Works well for me, very versatile.

I generally tie a uni knot. I've not had issues, but I have not researched it to see if it is the best method either.

My issue with this would be the joining knot being caught in the guides all too often. For those that use this set up on baitcasters, how long a leader do you use on average? I use braid to flouro on spinning, but I can see the joining knot causing a problem on smaller guides that can be found on baitcasting rods.

I use a 6 foot leader with a crazy alberto knot, micro guides don't do so well with this set up, regular guides do fine, there is another knot that is supposed to be the very best, FG knot i think it is called, lot harder to tie .

The FG is a great knot. Its a skinny long knot. Took me a couple of times to get the flour wrapped around the braid correctly. Easily goes through the guides.

Spinning only, braid with a leader that has an outer coating of fluorocarbon.

In memory of my childhood friend Dan Sterling, who taught me at an early age how to catch bream with a hand-line, and who unknowingly hooked me on fishing for life.

I'm not an expert on knots, but I initially tried the double uni knot I learned on ebay for the braid to flouro leader. I didn't like how bulky it was going through the guides. So, I saw the FG knot on one of the videos posted on this site. I'm now tying that knot at the house before I go out on the lake. I think it took me three tries to get it right, but I've tied it several times since then and it's held very well and goes through the guides much easier.

I did tie it to join 50 pound braid and 20 pound flouro. I got hung on a windy day and basically pointed my rod to the hang up and thumbed the spool while the wind was pushing my boat. It was going to straighten the hook or break. It broke and I could tell it broke at the junction knot but there was a LOT of force there before it broke.

I was impressed with the strength of the knot, so I'm still tying it. I've set the hook hard on a couple of 7 pound 12 ounce (both weighed the same on my scales) fish and I didn't have any problems.

I don't see how any knot could be thinner than the FG knot.

I have braid on all of my rods. I use 10# PowerPro on my spinning rod and my baitcasters have 20 to 30# Suffix 832. Braid lasts a long time, don't have to worry about kinks and cinches in your line, and the water isn't too clear here so line visibility isn't really an issue. Especially with the lighter pound test braid I use.

I use the longest leader I can stand to cast while not reeling the knot up past the first guide on the rod tip. This takes some serious getting used to, as most of us like to reel our lures up close to the rod tip. On the plus side you'll get a lot more distance out of your cast by not reeling up so far. On the downside casting accuracy is likely to suffer. You'll also have to pay attention to avoid hooking your buddy in the back on the boat on your back swing. If you watch a lot of pros, you'll see they leave out way more line than the average guy. They are doing this for casting distance.

this knot has been by far the best strength and easiest to tie for me. I started using it fishing for mangrove snapper this summer and am now using it on my spinning rods - perfect with 10-20 lbs braid to 8-10 lbs fluoro.

I use 15lb mono backing to 50lb power pro to 12lb 100% fluorocarbon. Tie the uni to uni or alberto knot. Still need to learn the FG.
