Can you explain in more detail? I don't 'know much about the fish, except that they are fun to catch and fight pretty darn good. I am guessing by the name "hybrid" that this is the offspring from two different species of fish, and as such, is sterile. Of course, this is just a guess and I would love to be enlighted on the facts.

They are sterile. The Hybrids most folks around here know and love are a cross between a female striper and a male white bass. This hybrid is called a Palmetto Bass. A male striper x female white is called a Sunshine Bas. Check out the TP&W stocking reports. Hybrids do better in warm Texas waters than stripers.

I read a study and they are finding (how I cant remember) that 2-3% of hybrids are actually reproducing in the wild. When they originally introduced the hybrid, they were all completly sterile. Something has happened to help some of them produce viable eggs with surviving offspring.
The hybrid is a cross between a sandbass and a striper. But at any rate they are 100%fun to catch.
I wish I could remember which article it was I read. I believe it was in the Texas Parks and Wildlife magazine. I have a subscription but my wife peridiocally "cleans" and it is always my stuff that goes. go figure.

so whats the verdict i read the articles are the fish(in lewisville and hubbard and the creek and...) reproducing it would change my mindset towards them ie. how i fish them the numbers i would keep each season the sizes i would keep what time of year i would for sure let them go...

It seems like there might be one in a million that actually reproduce, but for the most part Bigdads first answer was correct, NO!!!!!!!

So if the state releases millions of hybrids every year, and one in a million reproduces, that would equal 1-3%. sounds like a yes to me. Just joking with ya bob, but what I was reading in p&w mag was the biologist were hoping that there was not going to be some future problems if they did/are reproducing in the wild or back crossing wit other sandbass/stripers. 15 years ago there was no proof that there was any reproduction and in 2005 there was found statewide there was about 3%. They don't know if it was poor bookkeeping 15-20 years ago or if something genetically has changed with these fish.
That's all I was saying.

I am not totally sure either way on this issue, several springs ago had a fantastic run on Hybrids up Lacy Creek which feeds Cedar Creek. These fish were running with the Sandies and we would actually see female Hybrids dump their eggs and the eggs would flow with the current, then saw some male Sandies trying to fertizile. The water here was quite clear and shallow, 1-3 ft. We actually saw this happen.
I did talk to a biogolist about it and he doubted if it could happen, but as the old axiom says, " Nature finds a way ", I believe that in some cases this holds true. There have been several years when TP&W did not stock Hybrids in the lake and for a year after that we would catch small 8-10 inch Hybrids.
Who knows? We catch large Hybrid Yellow Bass, mainly at night and they are a cross between what? We have caught them up to 17 inches long, look like a Hybrid, but distinct yellow tint to them.
I believe that at least in CC some of the Hybrids we catch are a cross between a Hybrid and a Sandie, not a Sandie and a STriper, either way the lake is jammed full of them, and most are over the 18 inch limit.
I've got a group from my church wanting to book a trip with me to have a SS Class fish fry and they think the only lake they can get enough fish from is Texoma. What a laugh that is, one trip to CC in my boat and we will have enough fillets for several frys.

In the 'aquanic.org' see the section on 'spawning'. This 1989 report says: "Hybrid striped bass, unlike some other hybrids, is fertile."
Also, "Temperatures of 65� to 68� F are ideal for spawning hybrids and the parental species."

Also, "They may participate in spawning
runs with striped bass or possibly
white bass. There are also confirmed
cases of reproduction in reservoirs
that contain only hybrid striped bass."

It makes me wonder if 'back crossing' between Hybrids and Stripers occurs at Tawakoni, occasionally?
