I don't think I will see it in lifetime, but the way this state is growing they will have to do something.

I will admit I am a "Texas Implant" and being retired military I have lived in 11 states and 3 different countries. Texas is not necessarily unique when it comes to reservoirs being built and used as water sources for large cities, others do it as well but none to the extent as here in Texas. Having read the short synopsis of the issue in the link provided, I am astounded about only one issue, "cost", $4.9 Billion!! Couldn't enough large wells be drilled into the aquifer to obtain the same amount of water at much less cost to the tax payers???

I'd rather see some more lakes put in. The real issue, imo, is water waste.

Until we find a way to effectively recharge existing aquifers faster, I think increasing surface water storage is the only practical option along with improving the efficiency of water use all-around.

We have had a new lake proposal south of Tyler, Texas in the mix for close to 30 years now, Lake Columbia. Environmental Impact studies and Eminent Domain together take years and years.....

I know a lot of people opposed it. But, we wouldn't have Lake Fork if it had been stopped. I was looking forward to maybe fishing it before I am gone. If it had started in schedule, which was 2010, completed by 2020, fully inundated by 2030. I might have made it. It would have. Even a giant Lake Fork.

And at 4.9 Billion for a new lake, could we not figure out a way to build a desalination plant and gather water from the coast? Or...perhaps people could get away from those pretty yard and start planting native grasses and plants that aren't water hogs.
