Because they've gotta make sure we have tons of 16 inchers for all the tournaments. Ask a hard question. lol

One of the main reasons they stock lakes like Fork, Rayburn and Toledo is to enhance the genetics with pure floridas and not to add fish to the lakes.

I get what they are doing but that sounds just like a government agency to speak out of both sides of their mouth and say "We're not doing this to add fish to the lakes, we are doing it to enhance genetics, even though we ARE in fact physically adding millions of fish to the lakes each year." Sounds silly.

Because of the fish kill years ago, TPWD is again trying to get Fork back to how great it was back to it's late 80s-early 90s heyday. This is evident by the number of overs vs unders caught and weighed-in during Big Bass tourneys over the last few years. Yes Fork still has a population of overs but still not as it was back in the day. I can remember way back when, you would not win anything with an under and now they dominate the majority of fish actually weighed. Due to drought conditions and the effect that low water has on the spawn in any lake, stocking is a must. Stocking as they have, it won't be long and those 50-75 fish days catching 4-5-6-7 ponders will hopefully return. This is not to say that stocking is not required on other lakes that have experienced drought conditions which led to poor spawns over the years.

Hasn't Fork always been only 1 over per angler per limit?

I talk to my biologist on facebook, he responds well. But remember TPWD is a publically owned entity, that we pay for! Email you state representative too. Local economics matter a whole lot more to them tha TPWD

The simple answer is yes, but once released you can catch another. When weighed in a tourney it is considered no longer "In your possession" once it's in the Live Release Tank, just as if you had released it back in the lake yourself.

Roberts needs to have a million fingerlings a year planted for the next 10 years. Maybe then I could catch something on that toilet... LMAO

It's pretty obvious why TPWD has to stock so many fingerlings in Fork every year. Post release mortality because of all the fish dinkmaster tournaments kill. Actually, they're trying to keep the Florida alleles as prevalent as possible. Believe it or not, very few of the fish in Fork are pure floridas due to crosses. The more pure floridas TPWD stocks, the higher the % of those desired genes.

I don't think stocking has any significant effect on the number of fish in the lake. It does increase the Florida genetics which increases the likelihood of a few more "trophy" fish.
Each female bass can lay up to 7000 eggs per pound of body weight. So lets say there's a few hundred 4lb bass in this one cove. That's up to 8.4 million eggs. Now consider how many bass are spawning throughout the whole lake and some of them multiple times. Those 1 million fingerlings that are stocked may only increase the population by a fraction of a percent. Its just a drop in the bucket. Insignificant as far as quantity is concerned.
Water conditions, available cover, and available forage are contributing to the numbers, in my opinion.

If it's only a fraction of a percent in population it's only a fraction of a percent in the genetics... This assumes the equation is linear, but I don't believe it is. We'd have to ask a fisheries biologist.
