Heading up next week for a few days. Will have my father in law with me. He's 80, so can't scramble around a lot, what a the best spots? Still the Cold Hole (lake)? Is there anything in the evening hole that's easy? How about by the putt putt course? Is that easy to wade or still pretty muck filled?

LOgs are still in. Swim beach area is still slow water. Take him below EH Bridge - lots of soft water and usually a good amount of fish. Easy access too

I'm throwing a 7'6 & Abu Winch 65 lb Seagar braid Alabama Rig to the dismay of everyone on the river.

I've caught 2 LMB over 5 lb the past couple of days, no Wallys though.

I may get out the 3:16 Swimbaits and if that doesn't work go to a Glidebait.

If anyone finds one of these in the river there will be a $100.00 reward. LOL

The river is alive again. Probably from the four extra trucks they brought in.

If you know how to fly fish you can easily catch well over 100 fish on a trip. Some places you can throw a pebble in the water and 30 or 40 trout will swarm it.

There's a couple big fish over 20 inches cruising around as well. Some browns have moved up into the shallows to start their annual Spawn.

Right now my trips start out chasing Walleye for the first hour or two. When They slow down, then we switch over to trout.

Conventional or fly fishing trips available. Groups four or more will require another one of my guides to help out.

I'll be staying in the park next Wednesday for a couple days with the family. We visit 2 or 3 times a year but I've never caught any walleye. Are there any tips for catching them anyone would be willing to share?
I have never tried fly fishing, I'm one of the cretins fishing with a spinning rig. That being said, the lower mountain fork is one of our favorite places and we always try to leave it better than we found it.

Read through the last 20 posts and all the tips and info is in there. My guides and myself have told y'all everything, you just need to go find them. Currently we are the only guides at the LMF that are targeting walleye on purpose.

I can't find the post, but I thought I read that when you hook one it feels like reeling in a dish rag? I figured they'd put up a more intense fight given their apparent aggressive nature...

Walleyes aren't aggressive fighters. I've caught them up to 30 inches in rivers and threw the ice. They do feel like you're pulling up a stick with a few head shakes here and there. But they can be tricky to catch, especially on a fly.

Walleye is the second best tasting freshwater fish IMO. Yellow Perch has a slight lead, but you get fish for them down here either..

Not superb fighters. Not at all. But on 4 lb line it's fun when you get a 20 plus incher. First 3-5 mins are good then they give in.

Well, despite the lackluster fight I'm excited to give walleye a shot, especially given their reputation as excellent table fare. I enjoy catching something that I can bring back and they can enjoy for a meal fresh from the water.
Just a couple more days and we'll be on our way up there.

Fly Fishing Guide Report

2.5 hours from Dallas



Walleye, Spotted Bass, Black Bass, Smallmouth Bass, White Bass, and Rainbow and Brown Trout - all live in these waters.



Yesterday we landed well over 200 trout. Most were 12-15 inch average with a few 16-18 inch trout. Streamers and Near Deer's on the fly rod. Even when we were not trying to catch them and we were targeting other fish, we were still catching them. It was silly.



Smallies and Walleye were not on fire, but we found a few. All Jeff wanted and asked for was a Small Mouth Bass as he has never caught one. We tried one spot but no bass bite there. Went to a Super Sercret Secure Location, and Jeff Landed a 2 lb smallie quickly. Then a bit later he found what we were looking for. He nailed a 3.5 - 4 pound smallie. Then, two bonus Walleye!



River is slick, wear Steele studded boots or felt.
We all watched a Bald Eagle smash a trout in the river. That was pretty cool.



Lots and lots of trout in the river system. Baby Stocked brown running around the river too. My AM clients landed 40+ trout each. They thought they were using spinning rods till handed them a fly rod and showed them the roll cast. After about 30-45 mins, all I was doing was watching them catch fish. We tried for Walleye but they just were not eating in the early morning. The walleye didn't start till later in the day. Seem like 9-3 pm the river was alive everywhere. If your a purist fly fisherman, Grey RS2's in #22 will land fish after fish after fish, got bored of doing that as I'm not fond of catching millions of the small fish, so I'm 99% of the time a big fly guy. Switched to bigger flies and started killing the bigger fish!



After my trip, I fished a 400 yard stretch of the river and landed 63 bows and browns in 2 hours. Mainly on streamers. Every cast was a fish or at least a strike or five! They were actually fighting over it.



Monster Browns in Zone Two. We were looking for smallies at the time and had no interest in them as we walked right by them all. Saw over two dozen on beds, some well over 20 inches. Be carful where you walk as the Spawning beds/redds were very abundant. I bet people walk right on top of them and start casting not knowing they are even there. Saw a couple more big browns in some lay downs holding to the cover.
