Probably a kill switch override installed by previous owner. When the kill switch is activated (closed) in an emergency, it causes ignition current to flow to ground by closing the circuit. This causes the engine to die. If the kill switch itself should fail in the closed position, or the wire short to ground, the engine will not run. That could leave you stranded far from shore.
By having a quick disconnect in the circuit, unplugging it will open the circuit, causing the current to flow through the ignition system, where it belongs instead of to ground. This will allow the motor to run.
It's a good idea to have this disconnect on those motors that cannot be restarted without reinserting the safety lanyard.

Well I got the new ignition installed and I kept the disconnect there just in case. Hopefully whatever the purpose, I'll never need it.

"on merc yellow wred stripe goes to neutral safety switch in the control box" true but he's curious 'bout tha yellow/black... K5RCD, ya might wanna read my post!.. its impossible ta kill a merc with tha yellow/black wire circuit!..thats a yellow with a black tracer.. (unless ya wanna choke it ta death and thats a carb motor only) ABit, talked ta some guys that been around a long time also... they knew what i was askin' about but none had ever seen it used for anything other than tha enrichment circuit either.. so still donno?

If that is a Mercury ignition switch we don't think it is the Mercury brand and perhaps is an aftermarket brand, or OEM Install of another brand. Mercury does not have a connection in line. The nut, housing and assembly look like another brand perhaps Sierra, SeaStar, Medallion or UFlex brand. Not saying it didn't come in the boat with a Mercury, just that many companies did not use, and some don't still, Mercury Marine parts.

jan... some Mercruiser remote key switch/harness use a "connector" like that that can also be used in outboard app... kinda "one size fits all".
