I use snaps on crank baits, top water baits, and hard jerk baits. For terminal tackle and hooks I either use a Palomar knot. For large baits I would go with the San Diego Jam knot. If you are tying on a large bait you will need too big a loop to go around the bait if you use a Palomar.
I usually tie the snap on with a Palomar knot.

No snaps here. Cut and retie.

I use the little clips(no swivels!!) at bass pro and have never had a problem! they have 2 sizes- 20lb and 30lb and if using braid and like 8.0s I'll use the 30lb size but normally just the 20. I think the lure action is better than when tied directly to the bait. Plus I change lures constantly until I find what is working so this helps out a LOT!!

When starting out I had the same train of thought as you. I found my favorite snap was the Norman quick clip. Since then I've moved to just re-tying. I've saved some heartache since then. Welcome!

the "speed clip" to me always opened up. I did try them but lost lures just randomly on it so never went back to them. I like the clips cus you can see the hook hold on the edge so it won't "undo".

Just learn to tie a palomar knot. You will soon be able to tie this knot quickly and will learn to trust it.
+1 It's the only knot you need unless your tying 2 lines together. I use a quick/duolock snap (tied on with a Uni knot) for attaching hard baits (crankbaits, jerkbaits, topwaters), I have yet to have one fail on me. Some baits even come with this snap instead of a split ring (two that come to mind are the SpeedTrap and WiggleWart). I used to use a Palomar knot for hooks and a Trilene knot for jigs and blade baits until I learned the Uni knot (single uni or uni slip knot). Faster and easier to tie than a Palomar, I now use this knot for everything, except I still use the Palomar for dropshot. Added bonus for the single Uni, once you have learned it you can use a double Uni for joining two lines of different types/diameters

I change lures compulsively, cannot retie 30-40 times per day. Snaps save a ton of time, even if you are a fast tie. Currently like the kvd snap they sell through tackle warehouse.
Also, trilene knot works for pretty much all situations.

Ask yourself this? When they are making and testing these baits do they use swivels or snap ons... "no"... cut and tie on new lure... or buy more rod and reel set ups. Takes maybe 15-20 seconds tops to tie another lure. Don't be lazy.

No snaps here. Cut and retie. This. Except for spoons. Then I use a snap swivel.

And just to clarify. When we say just tie directly to lure, we mean if the lure comes with a snap or split ring on the eye, tie to that. If it is just the eye(worm hooks etc.)then tie directly to the eye. Hope this helps

Norman speed clips for cranks and some topwaters. Never had an issue.
