So, as far as I know my son hasn't done anything that he shouldn't. But, knowing a 16 year old boy I'm sure he has and not been caught. He has a set of wheels and goes to friends quite a bit. I have had suspisions of whether he was there or not but like I said, he has not been caught and I haven't really tried.

I have friends that have kids the same age, the stuff they have been caught at is what made me start thinking. Some friends have GPS trackers on their kids phones now.

They question is to add it the tracker to my sons phone or not? As a parent I'm not too concerned about being his friend and making him mad about it. But, and I teaching him that trust is nothing since he hasn't technically done anything?

Where do you guys stand on the issue?

I let my oldest disable it. We didn't have trackers on us when we were kids. I know, we did bad stuff, but so did just about every generation. It's part of learning what not to do. If she screws up then tracking gets turned back on.

What a maroon!

We use one on our daughter. Its an app called home 360 I think. She either uses it or loses her car. The only way around it is to leave your phone somewhere, which kids these days cant go without their phones.

I'd have to wait until he gives you a reason to put one on it. the things you do at this age can determine your relationship for years to come.

The iPhone has the Find IPhone app.

Just set it up and you can see where he is at any time using your iPhone.

If he hasn't been caught doing stupid teenage boy **** . I wouldn't sweat it at this point. It would probably take repeated offenses for me if he's for the most part a good kid. After all he's a teen-ager, at some point he may screw up once or twice. That's normal. If he's constantly in trouble. Then I would be concerned.

We have 'Find I-phone' app on both of our daughter's phones.

Not concerned where the girls are, just want to help them find their damn phones they've both misplaced on a couple of occasions. bang

I would not wait, I was more proactive to a degree. For safety reasons I would tell them to leave the GPS tracking on, but that I would not be checking it unless they gave me a reason. I would be open about it. But hey, I'm done with raising kids. They didn't have near the technology of today when mine were teens.

There is places I went @ 16 I still would not want my parents to know about. And that was 34 years ago. Some things are better left as a mystery.

I don't see how features like this contribute to a trusting relationship between parents and children

I can almost assure you that even if you enable the tracker, they will find a way around it. Kids these days are smarter than ever. Not to mention how tech savvy they are.

The find my iPhone app works great. We use it at least once a week around the house locating "lost" phones. If the phone is lost you can play a sound from wherever you log into the app from, and can also lock or wipe clean any device you have tied to your account.

You don't even have to install an app if y'all have iphones. When you go into messaging where you'd send him a text just hit the little i or details in the top right and in the page that pops up you can click share location. The wife and I keep ours shared, most of the time I don't even think about it, but like when I go ride bikes or run it's kind of a bread crumb if something were to happen or if either one of us is running late or haven't heard from, you can just go and see where they're at.

From what it sounds like, I would be willing to bet if you just asked him, he'd be cool with it, I think if you tried to sneak it on I foresee him mysteriously leaving it in his truck and riding with someone else...
