Hire it mowed. @ $35 it would take 142 weeks of mowing to pay $5000.

I don't think anyone is gonna mow 3/4 of an acre for $35. We have a company that mows our HOA area (about 3/4 of an acre) for $90, which was by far the lowest we could find.

To the OP: Definitely get a zero turn.

For 3/4 of an acre, I don't see the need to spend $5k+. I paid $3700 for my Gravely that I mow 1.5 acres with and it hasn't let me down yet (4 years later). I'm a big fan of buying the tool for the job you need to do and not overpaying. I would think a ZT in the $3k range would be fine for your needs and last many years. With 3/4 of an acre and mowing once a week for 30 weeks a year, you're looking at putting about 20 hours a year on it. If you get a mower that lasts 400 hours, that's 20 years. My requirements for that application would be:

Welded deck
ZT-2800 axles
Kohler or Kawasaki motor

Everything else is optional. I think Gravely, Ferris, Scag, Cub Cadet, Bad Boy, Hustler, Kubota, Husqvarna, etc. all make decent mowers. If you look at the specs, the mowers in the price range are mostly all going to have the same basic components. Companies like Kubota, JD, and Scag, you will pay a few extra bucks for the paint job & badge.

John Deere Z245 mower - 48" deck. I mow 2 acres every ten days for the last 4 years. Other than normal maintenance, I replaced one pulley, one belt, and one tensioner, all caused by me running over a missed tree branch. Been a good, reliable mower.

Hustler makes an awesome zero turn. Since I have shoulder and knee joint issues, the zero turn is the best. My arms rest are down and I can control the mower with my wrist.so easy to use. The hustlers are pricy, but very well built. Heavy duty deck. I bought the fast track mower and that is more than what I needed. If you're just mowing your own lawn, a fast track is not needed.

-ANY zero turn mower that you see at the big box stores are made of the same components, most from the same factory, with different colors and badging. If you're going to spend $2-3k there on one of those POS mowers, just give the money to me and go buy another actually decent mower.

-Look for a deck that is welded, NOT stamped. Easy to tell the difference. You can see the beads of the welds. On Deere, it is really easy to tell. yellow decks are stamped, green are welded. Go look at Home Depot and tell me how many green decks you see on Deeres there.

- Bad Boy mowers are the biggest rip offs out there. Look at where they are sold; Tractor Supply company. Ever seen a service department at TSC? Me either. Plastic deck pulleys that will hand grenade leaving you unable to mow your yard. And then there is parts availability. My neighbor grenaded one of his pulleys, waited 2 weeks for a shop to get a pulley in, and it was the wrong one (from the factory). I called in a favor to a shop that I've been using for a decade, and got the correct one, although that took another couple of weeks.

- Scag, Deere, Dixie Chopper, (some) Hustler, and Kubota all make a quality product. My personal favorite, and I've ran them all, is Scag. By a LOOOOONG shot. Better made, less plastic [censored] to break off, we ll designed, and will last forever. Scag is also the only manufacturer to use commercial hydraulic motors, pulleys, decks, and engines in their residential line of ZTRs.

- You can get a Scag Freedom Z w/ 48" deck (welded) for $4,950.00

- Scag also has their new Liberty Z w/ 48" deck for $4,200.00. The Liberty is a true residential Zero turn. It has the smaller wheels and tires like the residential models of other brands, but has the guts of a Scag commercial.

- You will pay more money for a Deere (those corporate boys in Moline, Ill. want their money too), or for a Kubota (Kubota is my 2nd favorite of all brands I mentioned, but there is a large corporate overhead that has to be paid with them also)
...WISDOM AND EXPERIENCE SPOKEN HERE...I to have a small lawn service and would never purchase from a big box store...however I've been running a commercial grade Bad boy mower for the last 8 years...the hour meter quit working 5 years ago and it had 400 hrs on it then...the spindles are extremely heavy built and I have only replaced one. Just normal maintenance and a few belts is all I needed.. most of the guys in the business around here run x marks and my bad boy has outlasted all of them.

Picked up a scratch/dent zero turn John Deere in like new condition--had .6 hours on it. Z355e. Should have done this a long time ago. I wish I had more lawn to mow now nuts.

I couldn't find anything with a fabbed deck under 3300ish. I was leaning towards a Toro, but their lowest level fabbed deck mower had a chinese knock off engine. They had a lower model with a Kohler engine but it was a stamped deck. This particular Deere has B&S engine and a stamped deck. Hopefully, it is reliable for my needs. I may learn the hard way but after having one of those "big box POS" tractors for many years I decided to give this one a whirl. I paid $2500 plus tax--seemed like a decent deal to me.

Edit: To clear the record a bit, the D series John Deere tractors you see at the big box stores are the exact same products they sell at the Deere dealership. You have to move up to the X series of tractors before you get the real deal (and the price reflects this). The lower stuff is made by MTD for both Lowes/HD/Deere dealers.

If it lasts for 3 years I'll come out even (less my personal labor) when comparing to paying someone for lawn care. Thanks again for the suggestions and advice.

Funny you should ask...I just got rid of my 1994 LX176 John Deer 42" mower - back in the day John Deere was absolutely the way to go as I had this mower since 1994 and replaced tires, belts and the blades once....never left me in a bad spot. Now that the dealers have to service the bs they call John Deere sold at Lowe's and other big box stores the cost for repair has skyrocketed so I started looking.

I ended up getting a Gravely 44" ZT mower and could not be more happy with the product and the way it mows the yard. I can pull a cart with it, mows the yard in 1/2 the time - we will see on the longevity.

I would not buy a John Deere if I were you.

Whether you think you can or you can't, you are probably right.

Nothing wrong with a thick stamped deck for home use. Just make sure it is thick and deep. Heavy grass will clog up a shallow deck.
