I am by no means starting any [censored] here so don't even go there. This all happens at the weigh-in so the boat is out of the water. At a tournament over the weekend the top 5 has to do a boat check. And one of the things is to pull the kill switch and turn over the motor to make sure it doesn't start. My concern is dry starting my motor. Being a Merc, Yamaha or what ever. Is that doing any damage to the motor, I.e. a dry water pump or anything. You will be fine, if the motor happens to start shut it off immediately.

I always check to see if the motor is going to start before putting it in the water. I don't want to be that person that takes up the ramp for 15 minutes trying to get mine to start. That being said , I removed my lower unit this spring before season and was going to change the impeller and it still looked like it did the day it was installed. I have been dry starting mine at the ramp for around 2 yrs. now. I just let it run for about a second or two.
