Correct. Then again, I've never really had it with coconut. Might be good...? The critical factor is that the fish has to be very very fresh.

CRAZY.... I just talked to two buddies and the SMACKS are thick. This thead is a good one and holds true. They also said that the smacks are of good size and are very abundant. I have a good feeling that there are some good size trout to be found down south in the surf. If only I wasnt going down during spring break!!!!!!!!!! Fighting the traffic on the island just sucks, so I will probably put in under the causeway and just head offshore. If any of you guys get out on PINS, let me know how you do. The smacks should be thick there too and jerkbaits should slaughter them. Only bad thing about the jerkbait is that you will probably lose a few in the process but also have a good possibility of catching jacks and nice size trout. If I do decide to make the drive one day(PINS), I will post up and anyone that wants to meet up can meet me out or meet me somewhere along SPID. Will be down for a full week starting next wednesday.

I'm headed down to Port Aransas next week. I'm going with a few friends that arn't that experienced with fishing. I know how to fish though. Any tips on where to go to catch some of these Smacks ya'll keep talking about? Any word on how the fishing is around the Packary Jetties? Or should we go fishing off Bob Hall Pier or on PINS? Any tips I'd appreciate.

Well guys I headed out to bob hall pier on tuesday and wednesday 6th and the 7th. I was intending on catching smacks and maybe a jack or two. I grabbed all my gear and headed up before sunup. Got the big rods out and grabbed my small rod and in about 3 hours limited out on smacks. Big rods still soaking. Then headed back to my truck grabbed my bow to do lil bowfishing. In about 2 hours had my limit of sheepshead with my bow. Big rods still soaking. Then a HUGE school of jacks started by, In my haste to get from one side of the pier to the other I stumbled over my cooler and ended up on hte concrete. By the time I gathered myself the jacks were out of bow range. I grabbed my trout rod with a yo-zuri jerkbait on it and made a long cast in front of the school. Three quick jerks and FISH ON! After about 15-20 minutes of fighting this fish landed a 25lb jack. Caught one more later that day. I'm not sure I woulda landed one of the jacks with the bow but I was gonna give it a hell of a try! Then packed it in and went home. Wednesday the wind picked up. Very few smacks caught from what I saw. I caught two. No jacks. I shot 4 sheepies before I lost my last arrow. I got a late start on wednesday didn't get there until 2pm. Left at dark. Oh yeah nothin on the big rods, one short run small teeth marks. Looked like a pup. I sure hope the sheeps head stick around for a while I want some more with my bow. It was awesome! First time saltwater bowfishing. Always shot gar and carp back home in the rivers.

You still have plenty of time for the sheepies, I usually catch them up until about may or so and then they really start to slow. Looks like you have at least another month of some good bow fishing. I have never seen anyone bow hunting for sheepies, where are you doing it? Thanks for the report and thanks for making me feel bad about still being up here in fort worth. I have been itching for three months now and this has been my longest drought in about 8 years. Its amazing at what a kid will do to ya. You aren't walking up and down the pier and shooting them on the legs of the pier are you? That would be crazy and one heck of a long shot!!!

I am doing exactly that pie. It ain't that bad. I have found that shooting at the them on the legs of the pier is tough. I have to wait until they turn and start eating. They roll on their sides giving me a broad side shot. I prefer the ones that make a circle coming back to the pier. I have an angle on them and can hit them easier. Great fun though!

A good way to eat smacks is cut them in about 1.5 inch slits from where you start a fillet to the tail. Cut to the backbone. Then get your fingers and push inside the slots and out should come balls of meat. Really good fried.

Yes pie it is great fun. I wish it was that easy. It is still tough but the crustaceans on the poles do seem to keep them around.

The sheepies are around almost every leg of the pier. As you walk out onto the pier just look into the water you should see them. Come back here and post as to how you did monday morning, water clarity, and what everyone else was catching please. Iw ill be back out wednesday if the weather is good.

Good fish how many did you catch? What would be a good lure or bait to use for smacks?
