It seems to be a location thing more then anything else. Up north most people call them White Bass, down here, many people call them sand bass.

White Bass is the correct name, of course, but sand bass is real common.

I still chuckle sometimes when people call bluegill and sunfish species perch! Cause...they're not. Lol.

Back in my day everbody down in these parts called 'em sandbass, and we liked it that way!!
Then a bunch of young whippersnapper yankees moved down from Ohio and Michigan and such places and started callin 'em white bass. Our great state has been goin' to hell in a handbasket every since.

When I lived up in Missouri, they were called white bass. Here they are called Sandbass. Doesn't bother me either way. Like saying black bass, largemouth bass etc. Its all what you are comfortable with.

In Louisiana we call crappie sac-a-lait, largemouth are called green trout, sheephead are called le prisioneur - I guess it just matters where you are from.

We always just referred to them as "whites".

I spent half of last year in Louisiana. I don't remember hearing sac-a-lait but people kept telling me that they were fishing for "white perch" and I had no idea what that was. When I finally saw one, they turned out to be white crappies. I had never heard of them being called that before. I was also confused when I first heard them call scaups "dogreis" and wood ducks "queelers". It was like I was in a foreign country.

I grew up calling Morone chrysops "sand bass" but when I went to college and took fishery classes, I had two professors that would ask me "what the hell is a sand bass?" every time they heard me say it even though they knew what I was talking about. They gave me a hard time about it until I eventually started calling them white bass.
