My brother lost a rod while kayak fishing in the Atchafalaya Basin when there was a bit of current. He went back two days later and snagged it with some sort of weighted treble hook setup, so don't give up hope. It can be done.

They make a big magnet that you could drag around. My uncle had one and used to find all sorts of stuff.
