Big a big fan of the Shimano Symetre reels, been using them for the last 10 years.
Bullet proof and cost effective.

Go as high up the shimano line up as you money will let you...2500 series will do great for what you want to do.
The driving force and secret desire of every bass fisherman, is to one day be a crappie fisherman............Could it be that the good Lord just smilies and looks the other way when a fisherman tells a lie?

Shimano Symetre 2500 and 3000 are on sale at Cabela's for $79.99; that's a really good price on a Symetre

President. I use a 6940 but my next one will be a 30 I think. They even have a fancy special edition model out right now that got a carbon fiber crank on it and its all flashy red and black! I like the rosewood handle on mine though. It's a nice small touch.

Shimano Sahara FE In all honesty, the Shimano Sahara is one of the best on the market, and only $80. It performs like a much more expensive reel though! I've owned multiple Sahara's over the years and I've never had a single problem with one of them. They have really high quality components, a good drag system, smooth retrieve, and they're extremely durable. Can't go wrong with one of these, Brad. I agree, excellent reels for the price. Sahara 2500 will fit your needs.
In memory of my childhood friend Dan Sterling, who taught me at an early age how to catch bream with a hand-line, and who unknowingly hooked me on fishing for life.

flanative- I have a Sahara as well and it does work well! Found it on sale at Dick's a while back.
nwest- I like the sound of your setup! skipping where we do(and no I can't do it with a baitcaster very well at all either- usually use 1/32oz weighted mustad hook and trick worms) and using spinning gear we just have to understand our limitations and not horse fish out. my biggest fish so far using this setup was 5.5lbs and she wrapped me around a dock piling but I just maintained steady pressure and she eventually swam back out. Granted we can't just "pull" those fish out like we could with a flipping stick but they will come out. So I checked my reel and I've got a 6930X model with 9lb. drag and a 5.2:1 ratio. It seems small to me, but it matches and balances so well with the rod I have I would hate to go any bigger. You guys think this is enough reel to handle a good sized fish? I've caught several 3+ and it handled them well, but not sure what's going to happen when I get that toad on.

Dude. I vote for the Pfleuger President myself. I have Shimano Symetre reel as well and have to say that I have not felt the difference in performance or quality. I like the small sizes too.. since we ae fishing for bass and don't go much deeper than 30 feet.

I saw James Biggs make a comment on here one time to the effect that a spinning reel is the one reel you don't want to scrimp on if you don't have to. I agree with him. You catch a really good fish on one and you'll be glad you spent a little extra cash. With lighter line and rods the reel makes a huge difference keeping a fish on. I started off with a Abu Garcia Revo SX in their 20 size and it does a great job. My next one was the Shimano Stradic FK in the 2500 size and all I can say is WOW! Shop around and get you the best deal on the highest quality spinning reel you can afford...you'll be glad you did.

I too say spend as much as you are capable. I personally use the Stradic. A couple of them are 20Years old and still going strong.

Well the boss lady told me I needed to wait to buy a new reel come to find out she had already ordered my father's day stuff. Somehow she knew I needed a new cranking reel and spinning reel. Feeling very lucky right now to have a wife that is so supportive. . P

I used my Shimano 2500 sized Stradic the last few days here in the "great white north". I normally use it for the same things, shaky, whacky, and drop. I have caught 60 or so Northern Pike the last two days two of them qualify for Canadian Master Angler awards (45"). The reel does it all great. Smooth drag. Smooth retrieve. Has plenty of power. I'd highly recommend the reel. Buy one used and its in the budget.
Eat. Sleep. Fish.
