Wouldn't KVD's success throwing a spinnerbait really indicate more that there is more than one way to skin a cat, not that he doesn't know how to do it? He's won and awful lot of money doing it.

Could it have been taken out of context? Maybe he said it in a joking exaggerated fashion? I just don't see how anyone could think they have the right to say KVD doesn't know how to use a spinnerbait. I doubt it. Never seen Clunn say anything in a joking exaggerated fashion. He is all business all the time. I was going to say the same thing. Clunn doesn't really joke around. He barely even smiles.

At one point in this conversation, Hackney said something like "I think the fish just stop biting the spinnerbaits as good as they used to" and Clunn disagreed. I don't remember exactly what he said to respond.
I saw Clunn about an hour after these comments and chatted with him for a couple minutes. I didn't think to ask him about what he said until after I walked off. Clunn was a one or two word answer guy, certainly not rude or anything but not as welcoming as Andy Montgomery, Ott Defoe, etc. Those guys where AWESOME to chat with..
KVD called in on the Bass Live deal yesterday and they didn't ask him about the comments.

Other than a select few friends, Clunn has said he really doesn't care to be around any people other than his family, when he's not competing.

Wins his first BASS tournament in 15 years and decides he can call out everybody... Haha. I know he is one of the greats, but come on man. I'd take KVD with a spinnerbait 10/10 times over Clunn. Where the heck have those secret spinnerbait tricks been the last 15 years?

Rick was talking about most people used the willow leaf blade because of it ability to draw in more strikes overall.
His feelings were that the pulsation from the cup in the Colorado and Indiana blades drew in bigger fish but he still liked the flash of the willow leaf so he designed the long drop blade.
He felt few understood how the impulses from the heavier cupped blades attracted larger fish.

You're right, RNF. Willow is about all they sell now.
I can tell you this; Stand at that wall of spinnerbaits and tell me how many single spins you see. Or copper blades. Or oversized blades, painted blades. Short arm spinners. Wedge style for bouncing off the bottom in 20 feet.
It's one of the most versatile baits every created but a lot of anglers don't utilize it.
That might be a clue.

Where the heck have those secret spinnerbait tricks been the last 15 years? This... and he didn't invent the blade on the trickster spinnerbait. It's just a larger, narrower version of a french style blade that has been used for years.

his comment is way out, i know he is old school but maybe what he meant is that now a days with the amount of lures out there on the market, the spinnerbait has not evolve and not many people choose it as the first option.
and yes is overwhelming the amount of lures out there from plastics to hard baits. i bet many people will put a squarebill as first option...

In his statement, Clunn did not include himself as one of the "great spinnerbait guys"....basically saying to the effect "definitely not me". His statement about KVD was kind of odd and he said it a little strange with a bit of a pause mid-sentence. I am not sure it came out of his mouth the way he was thinking it.

I am glad someone else heard this.. Like you, I thought the weird part was how he seemed to specifically go out of his way to say Kevin wasn't a great spinnerbait fisherman.
