Left way to much red meat on the fillet. That's why he didn't flip them over.

The best way to clean a Gafftop is cut the line and throw that nasty thing back in the Water! Whoa! Funny most people say that but I have cooked red drum and gafftop, served them side by side and the gafftop is always gone before the red drum. They are a good fish to eat if you can get past the slime.

Left way to much red meat on the fillet. That's why he didn't flip them over. It's easy enough to cut out the red meat if you prefer to.

Gaftop is good fish! I just spray the slime off with a water hose before cleaning them.

The best way to clean a Gafftop is cut the line and throw that nasty thing back in the Water! Whoa! I understand some folks do not prefer them. But I was surprised that the gafftop cleaning video had more views in the first week than any other video I've posted. It turns out over 2000 viewers have been interested how to clean a gafftop. It was something of a surprise that there has been more interest in my gafftop cleaning video than in my videos for catching bull reds from the beaches or in the passes. A lot of folks seem to be interested in giving them a try or improving the technique they are currently using to clean them.

My aunt would drag them up and down the shell beaches to get rid of the slime, cut off the tail to bleed it, then throw it in the cooler.

I didn't watch it because I was interested in learning to prepare. I was expecting a joke of some kind. I didn't know people really ate them.
I've seen tons of fishing videos. I've NEVER seen a video of someone preparing a gafftop. That's why you got a view from me.

I used to be in the throw 'em back club, but I kept reading on forums how good they were, so I kept one, probably 4lbs. I took it home, and cleaned it like any other fish. (The slime does rinse off easily once it's been in the icebox a while).
I fried it side by side with trout, and a store bought farm-raised catfish filet. I put gafftop on one plate, trout on another, and catfish on another, and asked my family which one was best (none were labeled). Four out of four said the gafftop was best.
If you are throwing these back, you simply don't know what you are missing.
