I looked up the Tailwaters shop website, it looks like a place where I could go crazy buying gear and I do things like that if the items are in my hands.

I think I am going to buy a 5 weight rod and it looks like I will buy the Echo Base.

Oh man, those are two SWEEEEET rivers!!! You should definitely go fish them. I believe the 3rd you're thinking about is the Eagle.

I've fished all 3 and they are all unique and beautiful. You can catch a BEAST out of the Pan and Roaring Fork.

Gamblingman, welcome to the forum. Are you from Winona, Tx? If so, I wanted to invite you to our fly fishing meetings in Tyler. We meet the 3rd Tuesday of each month.

Here is a link to our website: http://www.lonestarflyfishers.com/

Welcome to the $$$ pit. Whatever financial plans you had planned to have...well you can forget those, consider it gone lol. You have a great starter set up. Maybe even as good as you will ever need. Like anything Fly Fishing gives out what you put into it. Have fun, don't get discouraged, stay with it!

Kent,

I have a couple other hobbies that are not cheap either, my by far most expensive hobby is bow hunting. Having nice gear is part of the fun for me, plus I never heard of someone on their death bed ever say I wish I would not have spent so much money on fishing or hunting.

On the Echo Base 5 weight. Yellowstone Angler did a 5 weight rod comparison

http://www.yellowstoneangler.com/gear-re...loop-optistream

The Echo Base at $90 outperformed some rods costing nearly 10 times as much.

They don't have a 3 weight shootout but I figured for 90 bucks it was worth a try so I ordered one from an online fly shop along with an echo Ion 2/3 weight reel and Orvis access 3 wt line. It just arrived and as soon as the wind lays down below 20 mph Im going to try it out.

Several people have recommended a 4 wt as you have a 6 wt. Echo Base makes a 8 ft 4 wt if you want to try that out.

Haven't had a chance to try it out yet. Too windy Tuesday and Wednesday and the wife has been in the hospital with pneumonia since Thursday.

It looks and feels pretty nice.

She should be getting out of the hospital in a couple of days and I'm going to try it out the first chance I get.
