Wow....just gotta say. I thought I'd have some decent fishing early. And this would force me to come home early.

NOPE!!

I tied on a bone colored 1/2oz. Around 8 am. My only lure for the day. First cast caught a 1 1/2lb fish. Thought catching on the first cast...bad luck. Im gonna be home in an hour.

Wouldn't you know. I caught fish on this thing all day. There would be lulls in the action from time to time. But all in all, a really good day. No giants, but the lake I was fishing isn't known for a lot of them. Biggest was 3 lbs. caught 12-13. Even caught a little crappie on it.

I need more practice on it....what cadence do most of you guys use? I tried a pop pop pop constant retrieve that made it zig zag and that worked ok,mbut was tiring. I eventually went to trolling motor on high and a long cast with a very hard pop wind pop wind. The blow ups were INSANE! Very addictive way to fish. I hope I don't waste time with it sometimes.

Have not thrown a yellow magic a lot, but the explosive strikes for me have come on the hard pop as well.

All day long, post spring, shad spawn, cloudy day = a lot of "Bam" action

Wasn't a yellow magic, but I threw another type of topwater pretty much all weekend. It's on right now for sure

I like to fish them with 5-6 quick small pops and a 2-3 sec pause. I like to mimick a fleeing baitfish more than an injured baitfish. Helps with forcing a strike too..doesn't give them a chance to think about it.

I had topwater success this weekend too on a Bone Yellow Magic and Spro Frog. I'd give it a couple pops and pause. They were crushing it on the pause.

My buddy can and does throw one all day. But I just can't do it throw one for about 20 - 30 cast and I put it down.

The retrieve I use that seems to produce the best with it is a very slow plop. . . . .. . .plop. . . . . .. .plop. . . .in a constant but very slow rhythm.

I threw one for 3 solid hours on Gilmer and got nothing.

Not the Yellow Magic but have had a few days on Fork where a Pop n image worked all day long and it was catching GOOD ones!

Just can't beat a top water bite

I like the fact so many will put away a topwater once the sun gets up high.

Caught a 3.5 smallie at Belton on one last Friday. It absolutely inhaled the bait and had it lodged crossways deep in the throat with all of the trebles buried. Most likely killed the fish getting it unhooked, but it did swim off. Had another 5 or 6 largemouths on the YM.

I try and vary my retrieve until I find one that seems to work better. When the water gets warmer, I will use a fast hard retrieve and that does seem to involve more explosive bites
