I live in Torreon Mxico, that is 4.5 hrs from picachos, 6 to el salto, 8 to lake Guerrero and 6 to sugar lake (this is the only one that i have never fish).

Most or the highways in Mxico are very safe to drive. Not to do so because some news, is like not sending kids to school in usa because some crazy kid killed his teacher. 99.9% of the time you will be safe.

Now, about fishing. Lake Guerrero and sugar lake are more remote and away from any turist city, i dont recomend them. Your best bet its El Salto or Picachos because you can stay at Mazatlan with the familly and do a full day of fishing. In el salto you can catch from 30 to a 100 fish a day, and your odds for a trophy are good. Picachos in the other hand has NUMBERS, last time i was there we catch 200 fish a day, but trophies are rare.

Lake baccarac (or bacurato) has many trophys but you must stay there.

We stay in the town of Casas and I feel safe their, we drive around large cities. 7 trips to Guerrero over the last 3 yrs and never a problem, we do travel in the daytime and we are just there to fish. As for catching fish, that's why we go, big and a lot. Just about ever trip we get 1 DD but we had a 11,12, and a 13 2 weeks ago with me losing 2 over s also. I live in Louisiana and its 14 hrs to drive, we aren't the only camp in Casas being used now.

It is only money and if you got it you can make anything happen. There are very nice places to stay on the beach just outside of Mazatlan on the way to the lake.
I can't remember the name of the place we stayed once and drove the 45 mins. out to the lake each day; but we pulled our boat down there and had our truck for transportation.
They had a spa, beach, water toy rentals and even a masseuse. Meals were also served there outside daily under the covered cook area. Individual cabins were very clean and up to date.
Getting back and forth to the lake would be your best bet with Mr. Speed's operation. I am sure they could make that happen for a couple of days. Then the girls would not have to make that long drive each day to go anywhere. When you got back each day on the beach property you guys would have a nice relaxing evening with the family; watching the sun set on the big water.

I can get the name of the resort if this is something you would like to do.

They will send you a list of what's working. Mazatlan is a great family resort area. We went last year and my wife met me for 4 days after our fishing. Just remember,no hooks in any carry on. Rods provide and I take 4 reels.

Marina is the best of the El Cid properties.

El Salto and Picachos baits are the same:
Yellow magic for top water
Big worms 10"-12" greenpumking and red shad
Big lizards 8", watermelon/chart, greenpumking and red shad
Big flukes, chartruse, Arkansas shiner and bb bass
1/2-3/4 scroungers (super flukes for trailers)

Everything will work, but these are the "most have" baits. You will not need any finnesse tackle (it will work, but you dont need it)

Mazatlan is a great city. Make sure you go to the old downtown area and market. It isn't fake Mexico like the big resorts, of say Cancun. Fantastic shopping and history. It is a beautiful city at night looking down from one of the hills.

You'll catch fish with any of the outfitters on El Salto, but Angler's Inn will pick you up at your hotel, and have you at El Salto in time for breakfast. Angler's Inn is the class lodge on the lake. No other compares. You can have dinner at the lodge, or be back at your hotel in time for a meal with the family.

Don't forget the deep sea fishing either. There should be plenty of marlin, sailfish, and dorado in sight of your hotel.

El Cid Marina is nice for the guys, but the women will want to stay in the middle of the main drag. El Cid has a property there too. I like staying at the Palms. It's a former Holiday Inn, with the Sea of Cortez in back and the main drag in front, at fifty to sixty bucks a night, it is as nice as any resort hotel in Mexico, with balcony rooms overlooking the beach. Plenty of open air cabs to take you anywhere you want to go.

Pichachos for quantity of fish and El Salto for quality and size. El Salto is about 90 minutes from Matzatlan Airport. Let the ladies stay in the resort area of Matzatlan. Make arrangements with Pro Bass Adventures, Ron Speed or Anglers Inn. I don't know which ones work with people not staying at their resorts.

Pro Bass Adventures has great guides. If the ladies want to go to the resort and stay overnight Anglers Inn does have a spa option. All resorts will help you with what tackle to bring and they generally have rod and real packages.
