I am looking at a boat with a 225 E-Tech, I have also heard that they have been having problems with the lower unit. Is that true?

I know of one Etech. It was a 150HP whole thing had to be relaced with just 13 hours on it.
Take that with a grain of salt I was in the middle of the whole FICHT thing several years ago.

some of the larger models, especially the HO's have had overheat problems due to the lower unit/water pickup on some model boats, tunnels I believe.

I have a 225 E-Tec and I have not had a problem one as far as water pressure not being high enough it sounds to me that maybe the boat was not set up properly. I run my engine sorda high up and I have never once had low water pressure. Just my 2 cents. If you would like I can measure mine and let you know where I have it now.

All of the guys i know that are running 150 hp and up, wished they had dry stroage next to the dealers that sold them the e-tec, that way they dont have far to tow thier rig.

I know a guy that has a shop here in town and I was there yesterday and he has nothing but Merc's in there right now. As for "All of the guys i know that are running 150 hp and up, wished they had dry stroage next to the dealers that sold them the e-tec, that way they dont have far to tow thier rig." I do not think that this guy has even been on a boat with an E-Tec so there for I would think he would not even give a opinion on a motor he has never owned. That would be like asking a blind man how he think your boat looks. All I am saying is if someone ask for an opinion then make sure you have experience before speaking out.

I imagine he is a yammy man that cannot accept the fact e-tec is a great motor and I will bet they will start domineering the market soon. I have one a 90hp And I truly feel it is the best motor on the market today.

Hard to dominate quickly when they don't even have dealers in a lot of markets. What is their market share - 6% or so? I've heard good things about the ETEC, but domination soon may be overly optimistic.

Evinrude E-Tec doesn't own a bunch of boat manufactures so they can force their product on you. You buy an E-Tec because you want one. You can tell that by what you pay for one.

I have had two Mercs, One Johnson (OMC), and now a Yamaha VMAX.
I felt completly safe and confident in each motor. The two Mercsw were older models (mid 80's) with carbs and gave LOTS of trouble. The Johnson was a mid 90's model with carbs and I recently sold it after 14 years. The carbs had NEVER been off it.
The Yamaha is new. It's a HPDI model. Smooth running, clean, with lots of power for my boat (22ft. Pathfinder).
I have nothing against any of the motors. I have heard that the Mercs are really coming back strong and that the E-TEC is one to watch over the long haul. I have other Yamaha equipment and it is all quality. Hope my VMAX lives up to that.
In any case, you buy what you want or what comes with the boat you want. It would not matter to me at all if it were Mercury, E-TEC, or Yamaha. NOTHING ELSE.
Each has a faithful following and if you take care of them, they will take care of you. Oh, as always, SH^# HAPPENS! I have seen all three with powerhead failures when new. That's what you have warranty for.
Just my 3 cents.

Hey, guys i sell boats in corpus christi and we are a major dealer for: evinrude, yamaha, suzuki, honda, and mercury. all of these motors are excellent and each has somthing specific it does better than the others, but the motor we are selling 5-1 over anything else is the E-Tec.every engine rep we have will off the record admit that evinrude has caught them snoozing and are a few years away from catching up. Anyone who says there is any motor thats more trouble Free than an e-tec is a moron.

I sell boats in corpus christi and we are probably the largest bay boat and offshore dealer in the state. the overheating problem has nothing to do with the engine it has everything to do with the fact that specialty big tunnel boats feed aerated water to the engine(the problem is mainly with the H.o.models)we worked with evinrude and developed a set of larger intake fins that are installed on the standard intake ports and the problem was instantly solved. this fix costs about 25 dollars. who ever told you that there are any reliability problems with the E-TEC is an idiot. It's getting very difficult to sell anything except an E-TEC down here on the coast.
