Your first time going out i would just go to local ponds to get used to fishing out of the yak, throw some weightless watermelon red senkos or trig brush hogs in same color

Upper end of lake Hawkins or even Tyler state park has a decent small lake for a kayaks if your headed east. Any of the Wood county lakes can provide good fishing.

For an example of what I am talking about look at Buck creek boat ramp on Ray Roberts on google earth. You will see access with shoreline North and South and a road to the East and a train track to the West. Protected area, with lots of good fishing. Williams Creek on Fork right there at the highway is another good area for a small boat. Marinas are also good and safe for small boats. Fish the area you choose thoroughly and don't worry about the lake as a whole just the small area you have chosen and you will catch plenty of fish!

This is good advice. I look at a big new lake the same way. Don't try to fish the whole thing, just one area. If it has what it needs for a good bass habitat they will be there somewhere. The good thing about a yak is that it helps you to really focus on an area and fish it more thoroughly.
