Their original stance was not to allow anyone down below the trail way bridge. The entire trail way was, and still is, closed. They obviously changed their stance when they opened up Newman's to foot traffic. There was just as much chance of a tree falling at Irwin, as there was at Newman's. I assume the pressure from people to open up that area, along with the additional revenue probably swayed their decision.

Just and FYI for parking outside the gate at Newmans. I am a senior citizen and have fished those creeks for more years than I would like to admit. Outside the gate at Newmans is the only place I have ever had any theft issues. Several years ago someone punched my lock on my truck door while parked there. Fortunately, they hit it too hard and broke the arm inside also and were unable to get in. There was nothing inside to steal, so I may have come back to no truck. Haven't done that since. Low life have a severe advantage there because they know when you leave that truck you will probably be gone for hours. And the road doesn't carry a lot of traffic, occasional oil field worker or park employees maybe. Not trying to tell any one what to do, just be aware. As much as we'd like to think things are " like they used to be", they're really not.

Take it the yegua is up and muddy with the rain today. Anyone get out today.

I live up and around the water shed for these Yegua creeks and I can tell you they have received a lot of rain. Last time I checked, we had received 3-1/4 inches and it's still raining with another inch or two in the forecast. This creek will get going good before this is all over with. It will probably get out of its banks again.

Looks like the Lake Somerville watershed (Yegua/Nails/Cedar/Birch/etc.) has received between 2-4 inches in the last 24 hours as of March 8th, 2016. That will change things up a little.. lake is beginning to climb and is at 238.36 as of 9:25pm Wednesday. You can expect the fishing to be better in the creeks that drop and clear the fastest. This might put some more whitebass up the smaller creeks and be fishable in about a week.. I've noticed that in the past when a late March-early April flood occurs the hybrids sometimes move up the creeks as the whitebass are beginning to move back to the lake. Has anyone else experienced this late run?

I remember quite a few yrs ago when we took a good rain towards end of the run.

Hybrids had got stuck in Jardell. You could take your limit on them and move on. You'd have your dry land gaps between deeper pools of water. Fun and interesting at the same time...

we have had over 4.3" of rain over here where the East Yegua starts. It's out in our bottom.

Nails Creek SP Ranger just posted that Newmans is closed again. The creeks are high, muddy, and moving fast, as to be expected with heavy rain we just had. Just like last year, The creek fishing is probably all but over for this year. As soon as the Brazos gets up again from all the rain from the North, they will probably shut the gates again. I hope we don't get a repeat from last years flooding. Good news is the shallow bite and the cat fishing on the main lake is probably about to get real good.

The gates at the spillway are closed. The lake will see a good rise again.

Good morning everyone! We have some news to share. Newman's Bottom is now closed again due to the recent rains that we have received. You will NOT be able to hike in to Newman's Bottom like you were able to this last week.

A trip around Lake Somerville to check the status of the creeks after a significant wave of rain showers covering most of the state.

On March 10, 2016 starting at the dam and moving west up the south side of the lake, over Jerdelle, McCain, Cedar, Nails to the upper west end and the Yegua, back down the north shore to check on Birch creek. All the creeks are flowing well with muddy flood water that should bring up another wave of spawning whitebass and maybe some hybrid stripers if we are lucky!

Three to four weeks left in the spawn. Some folks should get a few good limits out of all this. Just got to hit the right creeks as they drop. The Yegua may take a few weeks to be fisgable, but the other creeks should be loading up.
