We're planning on putting our kayaks in at Irwin bridge tomorrow morning around 8... Depending on coffee conditions.
We'll float down to at least Newman's bottom, then decide on if we are going further down depending on the bite, and how we feel. I've never been able to fish the Yegua, so this will be a blast even if we come up empty handed. Be prepared to get wet, muddy and upset quite a few bank fishermen.. it is better to paddle up from the park where the kayak gives you the advantage needed to reach Newmans without walking.. Often times the best fishing starts about 2 miles up the Yegua from the park boat ramp around the Wolf Pond area. From the boat ramp it is only about 5 miles to the trailway bridge @ Newmans.. Crappie and big fat female whitebass will still be in the deeper pools anyway from the reports I heard so far.. I wish I had seen this earlier. We only got a little over a mile down from the bridge fishing the whole way with nothing to show for it. There weren't many people fishing that section. I only saw 6 or so people actually try that little section. Most people were walking down to Newman's, a we saw a few limits carried out. We'll paddle up from the park next time, but with the coming rain, next time might be a month from now.

I was told no bikes, you have to walk in. Not what I wanted to hear, because I'm not walking in. Bike ride isn't to bad, but it is a mile walk in, I've clocked it before.

For bankers, whites have started schooling on the main lake... All the veteran lake bankers know where to fish...
lake temp was 65-67 at big creek and closer to 70 at Welch

This next rain event (if it is big enough) will "seal the deal" for the whitebass. It will do more for the fish than the fishermen ensuring the success of the whitebass spawn. One thing that might happen is the hybrids could move up into the flowing flood water as they seem to respond later than whitebass to the calling..

If we receive the 4 to 6 inches like they have in the forecast, then that will seal the deal on the Yegua white bass spawn. But Cedar and Nails might be an option. We need the rain, so Im not complaining. Bring it on.

If we get to forcasted 4-6in they are saying as fast as its supposed to come, the lake is gonna take another major rise, the creeks and low lands will flood again. Bank fishing will be done for a long while. They will close all of the walk in areas.
If I fished for money.........I'd be broke.
In a world of compromise.....Some don't.

Well from the sound of it in glad i went today despite the showers as I may be the last trip for the season. Went to Irwin at 5pm and ended up with 2 whites and 3 crappie. Only saw 2 other people coming from far downstream and they had a few on the stringer.

The white bass bite has been slow every where. These guys should be up in the shallow waters running all over the place right now. For the past several years the action in which they spawn has been different, not real sure what to make of all this. I am always trying to figure out what they are doing and why they are doing it for future reference, but they keep me puzzled and confused here lately. It has not been the typical spawn thats for sure. Kind a weird. Oh well, just keep on casting and see what happens.

I fished below the dam yesterday evening. Fishing was slow again. I only caught 2 white bass and 2 crappie using the fly rod. Nobody else was catching fish either.
Fishing was great when the dam was closed. It was still good with the flow up around 650 CFS. Since they dropped the flow to 337 CFS I haven't caught more than 6 fish on any trip.

I had a guy text me yesterday and he said the creek has come up about a foot and.a little muddy. After last night's rain, it may come up another foot or so.

I spent yesterday at Lake Somerville. Made my first stop by the spillway below the dam, caught a few Gaspagoo and the ever present Buffalo. The bite was real slow, did not see many fish being caught at all. Made a move to fish Newman's Bottom till mid afternoon, the Yegua looked great water fairly clear with great flow. When I arrived only one vehicle was in the parking area, make sure you visit the Nails Creek unit to pay and get your vehicle sticker, they are checking. After the hike in I did manage to catch a nice 2lb bass and Cat Fish as well as 12 White Bass, the majority of my fish came from upstream the Trailway Bridge on jigs. Meet a couple of guys as I was hiking out that mentioned they had limited out on Monday, I myself do not know where the honey holes are so I just fish along the creek looking for deeper water with flow. All in all a great day exploring around Lake Somerville!

NB is open to foot traffic only from the gate. However, this rain event may change that?
Shut up and fish!

Newman's Bottom is currently open to pedestrian traffic only. Pay at Nails Creek unit, park outside the gate at Newman's and hike in. Current weather could change Newman's Bottom access, I would call the Nails Creek unit just to make sure.

Not looking for a fight here. When BCS said parking lot, I immediately thought of the actual Newmans parking lot. Was not aware you could park outside the gate and walk in. I heard many were walking to Newmans from Irwin bridge, but anyone going past trailway bridge could be subject to a fine. I understood the parks department were concerned for people below the trailway because of dead and falling trees due the flood.
