What's all the hate for. He caught hybrids thinking they are sandbass. What's the big deal and for those that keep saying they are under size? How do you know that?

I am thinking its friendly heads up! They aren't saying their under size but these guys who catch these regularly can give a fairly accurate estimate on size comparable to reel in the pic! The big thing is keeping unders is illegal and alot of us appreciate obeying the laws set forth for this great sport we call fishing! It's not hate its what GOOD people do!

Other than what Jason said, the limit is a lot different too. The hybird have to be 18 inches and a max of 5 per person. Sandbass is 10 inches and 25 per person. That's quite a difference when you think you have caught all sandbass.

Just tell me which creeks you were fishing and I'll tell you which is hybrid or sandies. Gotta love those fish. Nice catch

Even if he was fishing with one or more buddies, they still have to be 18 inches, and enough of us on here have caught enough fish over the years, that even in a"hero pic" like this one, you have to just take a harder look at potentially undersized fish, and many of those that we are calling hybrids, and btw, i counted 9 too, look easily undersized. Maybe not, camera angles can do a lot of wondrous and mysterious things. Just sayin'. I personally am not hating, but just feel for those guys had a game warden happened by with a tape measure. Could have been an extremely expensive fishing trip. This time of yr, you just gotta be extremely careful when fishing a feeder creek from a lake that has both species. That's all.

How do you know he WAS fishing with someone else?? He didn't say either way. But the pic and the context of the post leads one to believe he was alone. .

When a big whitebass and a small hybrid are close to the same size (14-16 inches) it can be real difficult to tell them apart especially if you do not know enough about hybrids. Most game wardens go by the tooth patch. That being said, if you have a fish in the 16 inch range that has many dark defined & broken lines above the lateral line be sure to look at the tooth patch closely. If the tooth patch is "V" or "heart" shaped and/or divided to some degree it is likely a hybrid.

Pure strain whitebass don't often exceed 15 inches and it takes two full good years for a hybrid to reach keeper size (18 inches). For someone new to fishing it is possible to catch whitebass and not know that there is another species stocked in the lake that look very similar but are capable of getting much bigger.

This world is a complicated place and we can lose sight of all that we must learn to live in it. Take a minute and ponder on all that you know about fishing, the rules and regulations, the biology and the environment and how it all fits together in this life. None of us are born knowing anything much outside of the basic instinct to survive. We as fishermen will always need to learn more and to share what we have learned with others is truly priceless..

That is a nice stringer of fish and I can see how you thought those fish were sandbass. I'm not hating but simply offering advice that can save you alot of headaches. Learn to know what is hybrid and what is a sandie. Game Wardens charge you by the fish when writing tickets and they are not cheap. I caught a 16 inch hybrid last year from a local creek and a guy thought I was crazy for turning him back. I explained to him that it was a undersize hyrid and explained to him how much it would cost me if the GW checked. He had no idea what a hybrid was. Again not busting your chops but know your species...white bass and hybrids look alot a like and I would rather you make the call instead of the game warden.
