I fly flyfish and jig fish(whatever they are taking that day) there a lot and it has not been good in the last 2 weeks. It picked up for a couple of days with the first wave of males(when the water was high but it has dropped a lot) but since then I haven't seen any decent stringers and I have only been able to do on my own 4-8 fish for 3-4 hrs of fishing. I move around a lot and see what people are catching and trying to find the fish but the best I've seen is about 15 between 3 guys with live bait fishing from daylight to noon. We need a rain and even without, it will pick up sometime soon I hope, but it has been disappointing so far. Good luck. If someone caught a limit that is good to hear. I haven't seen any. Have at it but just giving u a true report. It really isn't on right now and I don't know why.

It was great to see the game wardens at the steps today, and they were busy!

game wardens busy? were they giving citations? or just checking license and stringers? I've seen alot of people keeping undersized fish there. I've called the game wardens (1-800-....) before but never saw an officer. It's good to hear they are down there.

I was driving by and saw two Warden trucks parked amongst the cars parked that were fishing. I stopped just to say 'hi' and thank them for coming. I asked if they were just arriving or leaving, and one of them said, "we've been here for a little while but had to come back up to the truck to get another citation book. We've run out of the ones we brought the first time down...we're heading back down <grin>"

Glad they are out doing good work. I can't fish down there any more due to getting infuriated due to all the small fish being kept. You tell people and they just don't give a dam.

I don't even tell them anymore about the size. They usually wise up when they learn the cost of the fine. I have seen wardens in plan clothes fishing. Just a little heads up guys and gals. It ain't worth the fine.

Yes full stringer, all males. Waiting for the females to come in. It was slow for everyone else but I managed to catch enough with a fly. Sorry for the late reply.

Nice to hear. Congrats on your limit.

My wife and i went yesterday (Monday) afternoon. I bought her some shiner minnows from the duchess store. I planned to use my fly rod and some clouser flies. We arrived about 3:30 pm. while unloading the gear, I realized my fly rod wasn't in the truck. I looked all over my truck for it. I never, ever ever ever forget that fly rod. But I sure did this time. I was so mad at myself. Luckily, I brought a back-up spinning rod and reel. Once we got to a spot, i tied up my wife's minnow rig and got her started. Then, I tied on a minnow and made two casts. Bam! fish on! I put my wife in the spot, showed her what & how, then within 5 minutes, Bam... she caught her first fish. To save her minnows, (i only bought her 2 dozen) I changed to lures. I tried road runners, rooster tail spinners, crappie jigs, and I even tried my clouser flies with split shot weights (to cast them farther) I tried all sizes, and many different colors. No luck with artificial.

We fished for about 2.5 hrs and caught 5 between us. My wife finally caught her 1st whites of the season. (3 keepers) I was happy for her. I saw several folks with 4-6 fish each. It was good to see. The weather was nice, some fish are being caught, the scenery is beautiful... can't beat that with a stick. Surprisingly, we didn't catch any undersized fish that is the norm here. all 5 fish were 12" +.

I'll be back soon.

good luck & tight lines to all!

The Duchess Exxon store in Circleville TX. at hwy 95 & 1331 has minnows. they are only about 2-3 miles from "the steps" on the San Gabriel on lake Granger.

In the San Gabriel river, the primitive boat launch is one spot I know of to launch a kayak. It is not an easy spot to launch but you can park close enough to unload your yak. It is down the road and downstream from "the steps". The hwy 95 bridge area over the San Gabriel river (near Circleville) may be another access point upstream from "the steps" area. you'll have to hike your yak a ways to get it in the water there. Willis Creek park is another Access area to Willis Creek. You have to pay $5/car to get in there. I hear folks are catching whites up the creek there too.

I also have a kayak but will not use it near the steps because of all the bank fishermen and fly fishermen fishing. the river is too narrow for a kayaker to fish through "the Steps" area. I'd suggest you stay downstream or upstream and out of that area in your yak. Most kayakers are nice and will avoid getting in the bank fisherman's way. They politly and quietly pass and get out of the way. But I seen a few just be rude and don't care if I am fishing there. I hate it when a kayaker passing in front of me and stops to fish where I am casting. Makes me want to cast a treble hooked lure at him, or throw rocks. I guess you'd call that "river rage". LOL.

hope this helps. good luck.

Where do people catch the river minnows? I heard there are better spots to catch them other than around the steps. Those fish go crazy for the river minnows over what you get at the store.

I'd imagine you'd find some farther upstream towards the railroad and the 95 bridge. Less fishermen, and many shallow and deep holes. should be river minnows in there. The store bought minnows are just easier for us. But I agree... the river and glass minnow are like white bass crack. If one could catch and keep shad alive... man oh man, it would be on.

Fished Saturday morning for a few hours. I saw a couple limit stringers. They seem to stop biting around 930.
