You definitely know what they like Jamie!

I'm new to crappie. Can anyone tell me if I should be chasing them in the lower creeks at the same time as whites or are they more concentrated a little later? Ben said they would be in there all the way through late spring but I forgot to ask when the hottest time should be.

Thanks Yota,

The crappie are packed into the creeks. Sometimes you will catch them in the same place as white bass but they often pack in together. The problem is the crappie are small. I think JohnL said he caught 17 keepers in 100. Less than 2 in 10 has been the norm.

I fished with my fly rod and gray & white clouser again. I slowly started catching fish and once I got the presentation down I started catching fish on just about every other cast. It was kind of comical. I was the only person catching fish so I kept getting asked what I was using over and over again. People even took pictures of my fly.

I ended up catching 8 hyrbrids and 20 or so white bass before being crowded out of my spot. Catching the hybrids on my 4 weight was incredible. It was way over matched for those hybrids. They hit the fly so hard a couple times that they almost jerked the rod from my hands.

There are no fly fishing records established for the Yegua so I decided to have them officially weighed at the Marina so I can submit them for water body records. I registered a 5 lb./ 22 inch hybrid, a 1.8 lb./ 16.25 inch white bass and a 5.9 lb. buffalo.

I lost 2 hybrids that were even bigger. I was using a 6 lb. tippet. I tried sizing up to a 12 lb. tippet but the fish ignored my bait and I couldn't get a bite so I had to go back to the 6 lb. tippet prior to landing the 5 lb. hybrid.

Awesome fish Jamie. Keep those records coming! rockon

Side Note: I am sure glad you use a fly rod most of the time. breakdance I am also glad you mainly fish north of me. eeks Again SUPER FISH! flehan Bet the fights were GREAT! boxing

Thanks Chuck. It was an incredible fight. I learned a lot from losing a couple big ones. I was much more patient and let them get though their second run before trying to bring them into shore. On a 4 weight it was and experience I'll never forget and am already craving again.

I hope the yegua got some good rain to help improve the fishing at the Irwin Bridge around. These days, I have a difficult time walking a long ways. (too out of shape. wait... round is a shape!) Too bad Newmans Bottom won't be open anytime soon. I bet that place is full of fish!!

Anyways, I am just curious if the rain will improve the fishing nearer to the bridge. Us out-of-shape folks (my wife and I) would rather not walk too far. LOL

Appreciate any reports about the water levels and fishing reports there.

tight lines!

Oh... congrats on your fish J-Moe. I may need to head over to the spill way and try my luck. I have a 6 wt rod. I could only imagine hanging one of those hybrids on my fly gear.

I may have missed it... were your fish lake records on the fly? Congrats if they were.

tight lines!

Thanks a lot Catchnrelease. I applied for them as Fly records for the Yegua because they were below the spillway rocks, which should be considered as Yegua Creek.

Just imagine sizing down to a 4 weight and hanging in to them. A bit frightening at first, then absolutely addicting roflmao

Going to check out a little no name feeder creek in the morning. And then maybe check on the other upper end creeks to see if they have come up some.. adding a little flow to any smaller creek will get the whitebass already in that creek moving again.. I hope wink

Your right J-moe. My cousin and I have fished the same crappie hole everytime we have gone which is 5 total times. The first time when we found it we caught 22 keepers 7 being white bass the rest crappie. Definitely between the two of us caught over 100 crappie that day. The next two times I went I caught about 40 to 50 crappie with only 4 keepers each day. My cousin went a day by himself and caught over 100 crappie with 4 keepers. This Last Sunday caught over 100 crappie caught with 17 keepers. I really love eating crappie but I LOVE catching white bass. I hope I can catch the white bass like I've been catching the crappie one day this season.

Spillway is letting water back out...

Lake is just under a ft above pool. Why won't they just let it be? Levels are ideal and on a fishing perspective we can't ask for better....

No doubt!!! The answer they will give is it's a flood control lake, not a fishing lake. As the mouths of the creeks silt in it would awesome if they would raise the normal level up to 239 but that would require multi million dollar environmental studies. I guess we need to get our shovels out and dredge the mouth of the Yegua, LOL!!!
