Newmans Bottom is still closed and is waiting on the structural engineer's report and plan to repair the bridge just inside the gate.
If repairs can be made by the park staff the bridge might be ready for traffic in a couple of weeks.. let's hope for that to happen!

New Guy here. Enjoy reading these posts about Yegua. Brings back lots of great memories climbing those banks. Has anyone tried using cane poles and fleaflies on the Yegua(poor man flyfishing). Use to do it growing up in the 80's with Grandpa and family when nobody fished there(miss those days)and killed them. Also back then the hybrids would go up past hemorrhoid bridge, guess that doesn't happen now either. Probably not enough room and too much pressure there now. I might try to get back down there just to remember the old times but I went about 6 or 7 years ago and I said I would never go back. Trash and a lot of rude people unfortunately. I know there will always be good guys down there(everyone on here seems very polite and understands fishing etiquette), but it just wasn't the same. Good Luck.

No, it is not the same at all. I remember going and I would only run into locals. Now you don't know who you might see. But it's all good. I think it's been low key this year myself. A few days there was a big crowd, but it has tapered off. Not that many fish being caught.

I remember going down hemorrhoid road. It was good for that or bad however you look at it. Haven't heard any one talk about that road in many years. Those days it was almost sinfully easy to catch limits of whites. And you are right, it was never very crowded. Those were the days my friend!

Ultralight lipless crankbait....the rod was a 6 ft medium action spinning rod. I think someone may have stepped on it and damaged it previously. It was one of a dozen or so rods I let people borrow, and half are rigged with 30lb plus braid so visitors and family members don't lose so many baits. Cuts down on the mono in the creek too...... but it makes it impossible to fish a lot of the lures and flies that a lot of you guys are using. I really need to learn to fly fish. I have a little cheap fly combo, and have accumulated quite a collection of flies over the years, but I have just never taken the time to learn. I even have some fly tying stuff somewhere around here.

Just out of curiosity....do they allow the public to do any improving of the trails up and down the creeks? Like chainsaws, or a skidsteer(long shot) maybe?

nope.. not on your own..

yes if you are volunteering to work with the park staff on the trailway itself.

When I first started kayaking up the yegua from Nails creek park in 2001 I never saw another kayaker, only the occasional john boat.. fast forward 15 years and it is hard to find a day of the week where you do not have the company of the plastic navy all the way up the creek.. fishing is still just as good as it ever was closer to the lake..

You have done an outstanding job of promoting the trailway. I suspect most people fishing there now are like me. They googled Yegua and found lots of Fishtales videos.

Sounds like a plan. I'll follow the Facebook page, and I'll see y'all at a meeting as soon as I can.

Yeah Hemorrhoid road was a one of a kind. Guess its paved now. Our first ultralight outfits were Barbie type rods we would steal from our little cousins. Those were the ticket. 5-6 lb hybrid in that creek on a Barbie rod was something to remember. You would only land about 1 out of 10. Are there still Hybrids in Sommerville? If so I guess they don't go up the creeks anymore. Maybe the entrance is too shallow or something(looks that way from your reports). When Yegua use to flood nobody would be fishing bc the creek was too high and muddy, the tiny creeks going into Yegua would get cut off after the water would recede and would have hundreds of whites in the holes left behind. We would take landing nets and after our limits(junior high stupidity lol), we would put hundreds back into the creek. Guess we figured we did our duty. Fun times in the early 80's.

welcome Welcome CroakerSoaker

Yes there are still hybrids in Somerville. Not many have been caught in the creeks the last couple of years though. They may not stock Somerville in the future with hybrids though.

Great stories, thanks for sharing.

Last hybrid stocking was in 2011 and since that time Lake Somerville lost its allocation since TPWD couldn't prove good utilization by anglers. Those 2011 hybrids are half way through their typical lifespan and will go extinct before too long..
