I've been out there past three days in a row. First time I've been out there was Tuesday. Im sure that I saw some of y'all out there yesterday, one of you told me how you were catching them by fishing with small jigs on the bottom. Whoever you were thanks for the tip, my catch rate improved after that. Ended up catching 15, which is plenty for me. If any of you saw a guy with a grey shirt and red white and blue orvis cap, that was me. Also, does anyone know about accessing the yegua from nails creek park? I figured paddling in from the mouth of the creek would be best after seeing all the log jams yesterday. Thanks.

tall rubber boots.. or hip waders if considering hiking very far up or down any of these creeks. I prefer tall rubber boots.. don't cost too much and go on and off easily then throw them in the bed of the truck where the dirty things go smile

+ 1 on tall rubber boots or hip waders right now. If it rains and gets slick then cleats are a plus.

Yes, you can paddle up from Nails creek state park boat ramp into the mouth of the Yegua. It is a bit difficult to find though. HL&S has some videos and has probably posted some maps before but I don't have them handy to re-post. The first majorly wide opening you come to is Wolf Pond. There is some great fishing in that area.

I will use 1/32 or 1/16 oz feather jigs (color didn't seem to matter) and will fish holes where I can't see the bottom. Throw it out let it sink and twitch it sloooowly. Like he said I caught almost half (whitebass and crappie) by watching my line twitch after I did, as you couldn't feel the thump. They are there but not to aggressive and just sucking it in. I caught 3 in one hole 2 minutes after a guy just left it. Hope our responses help those who are not having as much success.

Excellent information Kirby. Glad to know I did the right thing by putting away the conventional gear with 1/8 ounce jig heads, LOL!! Now if it rains and gets muddy again then I might be at a big disadvantage with the fly rod.

Thanks thumb

Fistful thinking, I think that was me. I had on the purple K-State shirt and hat and was about 40 yds away and you were on the opposite side. Glad you did better after we talked. I forgot my hiking boots the other day and only had my tennis shoes and never got muddy (no need to get down in the soupy stuff to catch fish, now). Until it rains hiking boots or tennis shoes are fine and alot easier to walk in esp if you go aways downstream. We need to get together and try Nails or the Yegua as I haven't ever paddled up them either. I always wanted to try and go with Ben but it seems I always have to work or back in KS on his invites.

Foot attire on my previous post is for Irwin Bridge only at present time. J-Moe and HL&S is good on other creeks as I have been there lately.

I might be able to swing a Saturday afternoon trip if nothing comes up, but not sure I want to fight the crowd.

Fishytx, your right. With the weather the way it is and some good reports, I bet it will be a madhouse out there this weekend. Glad I have to work and will hit it again Monday and Tuesday. Let me know if you go either of those two days.

If I were to go this weekend I'd probably do Birch creek or maybe Jerdelle.. problem is that neither of those creeks will produce whitebass like the Yegua or Nails.. Sometimes the crappie fishing can be good in Birch creek if you can find them.. both of Jerdelle & Birch creeks have been scraped clean from high water and flooding after the 2011 drought killed so many trees. All those dead and fallen trees makes hiking back through some areas quite a challenge..

I went out with the fly rod again tonight. It was a really frustrating evening. I just couldn't get through the bluegill tonight. I tried moving to several spots. I would catch one white bass and lots of bluegill. Or I would catch nothing. I was also stubborn and kept using the same small fly.

One technique that I've used successfully before was to ignore the first bite, let the bluegill spit it back out and it will eventually reach the bottom. Then I could work it back slowly on the bottom. That didn't work either. So I went back to laying the line out and setting the hook quickly on the fall. I caught another white bass banana, and then 8 more bluegill bang

End up with only 6 white bass, a dozen or so small crappie and far more bluegill than I wanted. I think I may have to search some new territory tomorrow.

The small fish, such as perch, crappie and bkacks are abundance this year. I never caught so many undersized crappie on this creek. I would still like to see a three foot rise. Since Newman's doesn't look like it will open this year, a rise would bring some fish farther upstream where the anglers are.

I make a lot of post on fishing forums from my phone and it will put some starge words in the write up. Sems like I'm also having to go back and fix stuff.
