I think guided trips should be free.

Average 20 days a month of service @ 450+ per day = 9,000 a Month (Some more some less) Average 8 months a year = 72,000 annually ( Some more some less) Not a bad living but that's revenue... how much of that $72k goes to expenses? It's not the same as a guy with a normal job making $70k Quit it with all that common sense stuff!

The monthly amount should be multiplied by 12 not 8. you have already adjusted for only working 20 days per month (5 day work week--some more, some less) so that s/b $9,000 x 12 or $108,000 per year. average cost to do business at 25% ,,, so minus $27,000 = net income of $81,000 That is better than the median income today of middle class, not as good as some & better than others certainly does not mean they can afford to charge less just because the cost of fuel or bread goes down. just means they should put a little extra in the bank savings account for the leaner times. One thing no one has mentioned and it is talked about a lot on here,,,,,the trip tip !!!! Tips are a part of income just like a waitress. 20 trips per month x 12 months = 240 trips per year with an average tip of $100 = an additional $24,000 That just put a guide at a net income after expenses of $105,000. So,,,somewhere between $80k & $105k after expenses. More power to em' ,,,,, they earn every penny of it.

A few years ago I remember most guides especially around Fork that had pretty steep price increase due to high gas price, and I understand that, it was almost $4.00 per gallon.
It seem like most rates especially Fork is around $450 per day full day, Seems like it was $275 for full day back before gas price increased.
Has anyone seen guides rate come down since gas has been at such a low rate? Did your boss lower your salary because you pay less in gas to drive back and forth to work? Fact is they can charge whatever they want and people either pay it or don't. They take risks being self employed. Sometimes the risk Pays off and sometimes it doesn't.

Bobby; It is a legitimate question to ask......if ratesare raised because an expense goes up,,,,,then it "should" very well drop if the expense goes down. some people do have their mileage rates adjusted for the cost of fuel,,,,,ask any trucker that has a fuel surcharge......so the answer to YOUR question might very well be YES. we have a couple of customers that we are very transparent with and cost of product goes up or down depending on the cost of the expense to make the item.

I don't have time to look at the math, but assuming your average guide is booked 240 days a year is silly

I think Marc broke it down pretty fair on page 1. He pays himself $25/hr for his time. The rest of the cost of the trip is expenses.
I bet your average guide isn't booked 150 days a year.
150x8x$25 = $30k
But in any case, I don't imagine the prices will come down until people stop paying them.

After doing some guiding I wouldn't even consider doing it again for less than $450 a day. Its just not worth doing for much less than that.

I personally have never felt a guide would do that job for the money. It can't be a tremendously profitable profession. To me, it has to be a labor of love and something that is done because of how much it is enjoyed. Just my opinion, and I only speak for me. I admire guides tremendously and frankly don't think I have it in me to be one. I know I would struggle to put up with people the way they do. Kudos to those that follow their dreams to be one.

Hey nutman, just so you know, nobody on Fork is running 240 trips per year bud. If you hit 200 its kind of the gold standard and what the majority strive for and much fewer achieve. The ones who are financially successful typically have their hands in other pots or are single without kids and live a very budget friendly life off the water

So are you saying you are using 40+ gallons of gas and a gallon of oil per trip?

Most of the guides I know are off fishing tournaments half the time.

I dont see it coming down but here is a little break down IMO. I figure my time on a trip is worth at least $25 per hour X 8 hrs $200. Then fuel per day just a average lets say $75 that would be truck and boat but some days if fishing is tough then just boat gas can eat that up.
Now at $275 plus Oil $25 gal we will just throw that in for a even $300 now, not that you would use it all in one day but you have to have it. So now we are at $300 the use of my equipment this is boat/rods/reels/line/lures/ice/water all should be worth $200 IMO
Wear and tear on boat should cover that IMO. Then you have insurance on truck/boat/guide Ins,guide license, trailer tags boat tags, boat ramp fees, and lots of other items. With all the above that puts us at $500 per day right there.
Just so many things to consider what a guide has to be ready for and it all cost money. If a customer loses a $10 bait or a $20 bait that is a direct hit to the guide unless it is a sponsor bait.
I know my boat/guide/truck insurance has all gone up in price and that alone would make up for the price of gas dropping.
What has always cracked me up is the same customers who fish most always hunt. They pay twice the amount for a day hunt or guided hunt and never complain about not killing.
You take that same guy fishing and if he dont catch 30 he had a bad experience. Fishing is easy.... catching is hard !
Now all of this is in my opinion and how I see some of the cost issues but not all will see the glass half full or half empty.
None of us guides are getting rich I can assure you.
People pay $1000 to go to a football game or other events where no equipment or expertise is available. Lawyers/Doctors, get my day rate per hour, now there is a issue. IMO Exactly why I chose to go make a secured $35-50/HR in healthcare! I would absolutely LOVE to be a guide, and feel secure that I could do it- but it's just not worth the minimal amount you make! My hat is off to you guides!!
