Here we go again with the small mouth debate on Ray roberts. I have caught my share of them and they are small mouth imo I have caught plenty of spots out there too and their coloration and mouth is completely different. The small mouth are weird out there if you put them in the live well for a couple Hours their colors completely change and they get the real light bronze colors like most other smallies. You guys can believe what you want but I weighted in several and a few I didn't even realize were smallies until I pulled them back out of the live well. Almost like a completely different fish. It's weird that the color can change so much in a few hours and I have no idea why they do, but just what I have noticed. Congrats on your hat trick looks like you were in the right area of the lake to me. Myers is a comparison picture for you guys on a double from the fall had a smallie on the front hook and a spot on the rear hook.

Nice goin JoeFriday... I'm gettin a late start this morning so may check Ray Bob out today. I haven't been since right before it closed. Also...
That's 100% without a doubt a smallie and Brad is absolutely right about the cooler effect. I have personally witness this myself. Craziest thing I've ever seen.

Thanks guys. Didn't realize the smallmouth would be somewhat controversial. This is the best start of the year I have had. It's also the first time I have spent any consistent time winter fishing on Roberts. Hope the momentum continues.

If it's not 100% smallie then it's most definitely a meanmouth. (which is 1/2 smallie) I've caught a pure smallmouth on Roberts and several meanmouths and in comparing the two, this one looks closer to the meanmouth. And most definitely a hat trick either way you look at it. Cool catch.

Found 56 degree water. Fishing ridiculously tough. Only one bite. Water still is stained.

Nice fish. Brad's pics give a great comparison note the small mouth bottom is speckled with blotches in the white now look at the spot it has broken lines down the sides in the white. The other smallmouth pic by 361V is the same splotches in the white no broken lines. Spots and smallies interbreed that hybrid is what is in the first pick.
OP I will take those 3 any day those are nice.
