Caught 1 white and lost count on the 9 1/2" crappie as well. Brought home a stringer full of legal sized crappie, my one white and a ginormous red ear perch.

J-Moe caught six. He caught them all on the small jig and I think he is beginning to like this set up as he gets use to it all. Every time we go out, he learns a few extra things and he now knows what he has to do to get bit with them. In due time, he will be hauling in bunch of fish on every trip. Fishing with these small jigs is just like everything else, practice and more practice.
But back to the fishing trip, these guys had a bad case of lock jaw today. Man it was slow and tuff.
I brought home nine, but thats not saying much for the walking distance and time put in.

I bought an ultra light rod so I could throw that 1/32 ounce jig all the way across the creek. That made a big difference. Catching six in only about 30 minutes really helped me to build confidence and start to understand the finer points of technique. Thanks Doug, I'm really having a blast and I'll have it down to an art before the end of the run. It really is very close to the art of fly fishing and that is my true passion. The way the creek is dropping I should be able to break out the fly rod and get down on one of those sandbars soon.

Do you have a picture of the red ear? I only caught one red ear on Lake Somerville last year. I would be interested in knowing where you caught it. I love fly fishing for sunfish.

Robert, the lightest line we use in the Yeagua is 6 lbs. I have a lot of issues with line twist on my spinning reel. Does it hold memory? Would it work in 6 lb? I have had nothing but problems with floro. Every brand I've tried twists worse than mono.

JonL, it looks like you had a good time with family while catching a few good fish. Congrats on a nice outing.

Fishytx, good to finally meet you 2x this weekend. Looks like going to Fayette on Sunday turned out to be OK since it was slow for you at the creek. Be back out in a couple of weeks and hope we meet up again.

As much as no one would like to hear this, we need another flood in this creek. Now that these fish are becoming more developed, the drive to go upstream should be in full swing and a flood right now would really pull up a bunch of fish out of the lake and up into the creeks. All this fish catching has reduced the population a little, a flood would replenish these hard fished holes. The trails out there are beating down so much right now, they look like they would towards the end of the spawn. This creek has been hit hard. There has already been a lot of fish taken out.

No red ear pic j moe. It was big enough to fillet though.

Irwin bridge is really the only bank fishing place you can get to. Instead of having folks spread out everyone has to use the same starting point now. I agree those trails are wore out already.

I forgot to mention this. I had heard that there is a very good chance that Newman's Bottom will be open to the public by next weekend. They are working on getting the road back in shape this week, so the chances are good. I got this info from a game warden by the name of Adam. Oh boy, more banks to fish from.....

I know this to be true, but it still seems counter intuitive. I mean, why does it take a flood to move these pre spawn fish into the creeks? The lake is still two foot above pool. There's more than enough flowing water for a good solid run. Can the fish not find the creek unless there is a good flood?
