When sandbass are In the creeks fly can go 20-1 on live bait. And a roll cast is almost all that it ever needed. My new sandbass creek rod is a little 7'6" 3 wt. it's a close quarter fish catching Machine. Yes they are still releasing water from Somerville. It is still about 2 feet above normal.

If I ever said something negative about fly-fishing, then I don't remember it. I see way to many fly fisherman catching fish to ever do that. Not only that, but I too use to fly fish all the time. I like it. My shoulders won't allow me to do this anymore, otherwise I would still be out there whipping these fish with it. You can roll cast into some supper tight places where others can't reach.
Today I fish with a real light ultra light spinning rod set up. My rod is rated for 2 to 6 pound test line and the reel is rated for 2 to 8 pound test line, but I use 6. But a fly rod is almost out of the question on the Yegua creek. The Yegua is a swamp and jungle all in one. It's hard enough as it is to use a five foot rod while traveling around on the banks and then using nothing but a flip of your wrist to cast a bait. No room for a full cast, just a flip. I've done the slingshot cast in a few really tight spots, but hey, it works.

J-Moe told me he was going early this morning, so I sent him a text to see how it was going. That was an hour a go and he already had two right from the get go. So there is bite going on. And that is enough info to get me excited about going. Guess I'll be rolling in that direction soon.

That is some serious dedication! Not quite worth the 1.5hr drive for me. I imagine it was probably in the upper 20s in the creek bottom around sunrise. Slight chance of rain next week and next Saturday is looking good with a high of 75.

Thank you for the videos. I intend to head out to Somerville soon and help with the clean up. In the meantime my wife and I will head out on a recon mission in the early morning and get to know the area around nails creek state park. Never been to lake Somerville I've heard lots of great stories. We'll also head out below the dam. I'm a saltwater fisherman however I'd like to try my hand with the white bass and hybrids. I'll bet J-Moe had ice forming in the line guides this morning. I've fished out there when you had to dip the rod tip in the water before every cast to clear the ice.

Yes I did have ice on the top two guides. I couldn't figure out why my rod wouldn't cast properly

So I was planning on going to Newman's bottom tomorrow but it sounds like that is out of the question? Are there any other creeks in that area that I can fish? I've never been out there and I'm itching to get out of the house.
