My friend has a 4x4 crew cab Eco-diesel and really likes it. The interior on this thing is hands down the nicest I have seen in any truck, heck and most luxury cars I've been in.
He averages 25mpg in all around driving and gets 29-32 on the highway.

I love diesels but with all the recycling of engine exhaust I might buy a gasser next time.

The 2.7 would be a valid alternative for the ecoboost. If you don't tow much like me it would do nicely and I would probably buy it with the highest gears to get better mpg. I only pull about 10 percent of the time anyway.

Buddy has one. It's ok it has a lag typical of diesel. Gets 26-28 mpg

Don't like anything else about the truck really, the air suspension is a pain and I don't like the transmission set up (it's a knob on the dash)

How far is it to work? Unless your commuting long distance you may not save all that much if any of you consider the upfront cost, extra fuel cost and maintanance of owning a diesel

If your just looking for fuel go buy a Kia optima. $20-$25k, cloth seats and pretty bare bones like you like and they get 32mpg+

Personally I want to buy a car. I found me a nice 2011 camry low enough miles with a manual I like. Wife wants a truck again. If I get a truck its likely to be an ecodiesel. I found several on lots in SA new for 35-39k and that's for a crew cab 4x4. Comparable trucks with v-8's run decently close to the same figure.

Don't get me wrong... I WANT A TRUCK! I also have most of my down payment saved for an investment property and I don't care to blow it on a truck and set the investment back another couple years, that's why I "want" a car.

I think that truck would shine for someone that towed daily. I hear claims of 16 - 17 mpg towing boats. I like to buy a truck and put 300,000 miles on it. I just think repair cost and break downs would kill you if you kept it a long time.

I have looked into it some on the cost side and I agree seems like a very hi maintenance vehicle. Fuel filters are expensive, Oil changes are expensive but its a 10k mile change interval. I read the service schedule calls for a trans service at 40k miles with a filter that costs $200... not sure im into that. Will have to see. Going to go drive a few of them this weekend.

How long would you like to keep it? Those $5,000 injector replacements at 150,000 miles get expensive these days on modern diesels.

A long time.

Is there a 150k mile service of replacing them?

If you keep on top of fuel system maintenance injectors last a long time. Have taken care of several diesel pickups for family and friends and the only one that needed injectors was one I bought used with 120k miles on it, the others are all over 200k and going strong.

How much down are you planning on putting? I put $5k down on my Silverado. You buy investment property your looking at 20% down

Well... I lost wife won, again, and we have a new pickup sitting in the drive.

New 2015 Ram 1500 Crew Cab 4x4 Ecodiesel with 3.55 gears

Had 68 miles on it when we bought it and Avg. Mpg was sitting at 9.0 MPG. I haven't cleared it yet and its got 173 miles on it and up to 23.8 mpg with a little hwy and mostly mixed driving.

It has a little bit of turbo lag, but not horrible and im used to it after driving several older diesels. The 8-speed takes a little getting used to, many shifts to get up and rolling, but once in gear it holds gears well. Pretty quiet, but has an unmistakable diesel sound as well. I bought the cheapest trim package I could and it came with a back up camera, brake controller... they no longer know what bare bones is. To me this truck is loaded minus the leather which I don't want and its a tradesman. Like it quite a bit so far.

Congrats on the new ride. Now the price of diesel will shoot up just because you bought one. grin

I have a 2015 eco diesel. It's my work truck. 25 mpg. As its a 4x4. I've towed my 14000 lb Mack with it. It's a nice truck with a nice ride.

The only thing I dislike is the excessive turbo lag. I think a tuner would clear it up.

I was a little leery of the amount of lag in first gear, but it seems like it may have been more the computer learning my driving habits more than anything. Will see how it goes.
