Sometimes yes.. Honor boxes are a problem.. too many dishonest people and thieves in that area.. If I keep fish I'll stop by Nails park to clean them. I also have a annual park pass..

Just didn't want to have to drive past Irwin and go to Nails just to have to turn around and go back to Irwin esp if the park doesn't open till 8:30. Also, if I get a pass at Irwin can't I use it to get into nails and clean fish? Thanks, just haven't been out there that much.

If your going to just clean fish at the station I'm only assuming but the ladies at the office should waive your fee. They have for deer hunters from the WMA to come inside the park to hang and clean their deer at the cleaning rack.

No, I'd have the permit from Irwin. Wouldn't use their facility without paying for a day pass.

When you get a pass to any state park it is good for all state parks for the day I'm an annual state park pass holder and the long time President of the Partners at Nails Creek which is the friends group for the park. The partners friends group has lost it's mojo over the last few years and I haven't had time to focus much effort on the group or it's activities as of late. I'm the fisherman of the group and have spearheaded most of the events centered around kayaking and fishing. When Newmans is closed the park takes a huge hit in traffic to the creek and with it goes the revenue from about 10,000 to 20,000 visitors. Kayaking the creeks from Nails creek park has become very popular which I've been pushing through my many videos doing just that. What this leads to is the only proven way to truly support the state park or any park for that matter.. go and have your presence there counted. Sneaky Pete doesn't get counted but loses just like the rest of us when the park closes. You have to remember that you are working with the government when entering the park or WMA and numbers matter more to the bean counters than the activities of a few stingy old fishermen.

I met up with J-Moe yesterday at Irwin. We explored the upstream area. It felt great to get back on some areas I haven't fished in five years or so. We did find a few fish, but decided to head back and see if we could get into some better fishing in. But this did not happen. That cold snap has slowed the bite down big time. But on a high note, the water is starting to look really good. Jamie, I had good time, thanks for coming back to Irwin Bridge and exploring the upper end with me. He was at Cedar creek when I texted him. Oh yeah, we did catch more upstream than what we did downstream. Our foot prints were the first ones up there. No signs of others fishing this area at all. But in order to fish this area, you have to want it. We fault a swamp and tangled up under brush to get there. No trails what so ever at this point and it's very tuff to go through. But I have covered just about every inch of this creek fishing for these whites. It has taken me many years to do it, but I cant think of an area I havent fished at some point or another. Ive only been about two miles downstream from Newmans bottom, I have yet to walk it all the way to where it meets the lake. And I see no reason to explore this any farther, thats not where they spawn. How ever, they will stack up in those holes, but they are hard to find. Give it month and those fish will continue their journey on up the creek to the spawning areas. Its a good staging area for these fish until then. Oh this creek is full of fish, when it turns on, its going to be crazy good.

Hey people, if you pack items in, then it becomes your responsibility to pack it back out and leave this area as clean if not cleaner than it was before you got there. I could not believe the trash I saw yesterday. Are you kidding me, NO ONE wants to see this stuff while they are out there enjoying this envirment? Rolled up fishing line and the package your artificial baits came in will not take up much space in your pocket, please take it with you. Beer cans seem to be an issue as well. You had the extra space on you to carry it in there, bring a plastic bag to stick your empties in to carry it back out in that same space. Seems like when one starts this throw trash on th ground, it snow balls and many others will follow suit. If I see someone leaving a mess anywhere, I will ask them to pick it up and take it with them. Doing this is so wrong in so many ways. Just the other day I ran across a duck that had drowned due to being tangled up in old fishing line. If you throw it on the ground, it will find its way back into the water at some point, get hung up on something and then it becomes a booby trap for wildlife. Wadded up fishing line kills a lot of wildlife. Please dispose of it properly. It takes a long time for this stuff to rot, but a very short time to dispose of it properly. When I see someone leaving a mess, I automatically develop a negative vibe about that person. I dont get it and I guess I never will. I wasnt raised that way and Im sure most of these people were not either. They are just being lazy.

It's a sad deal that we have to discuss people not paying the entry fee and not picking up after themselves. There are very few places like the Yegua or Nails where the public has bank access to a fantastic fishery. If everyone does their part like responsible adults, we can all enjoy the experience and hopefully our kids and grandkids can too.
Looking at the weather, Wednesday and Thursday look like prime days for the fish to go off if it doesn't rain too bad. I'll be there Saturday with my 7 year old for his first time on the Yegua. Looking forward to us getting muddy and hopefully catching a few fish again.

Camped this weekend at Nails Creek State Park with a couple friends from the DFW area.
Bank fished Friday evening and found a pretty decent Crappie bite in Nails Creek -
Saturday we kayaked up Nails hoping for more of the same, but the cold front really put a damper on things. We paddled around in the rain all morning and only managed a few dink Crappie and some small LMB.
Sunday we headed up the Yegua in my friends boat and found a few White Bass biting.
Was an awesome weekend even though the fishing was a bit slow. One thing of note, the fish cleaning tables don't have power at the park, so you may want to bring a filet knife or an alternate power source if you plan on cleaning some fish there.

That's a good looking stringer! It's a chore to haul a stringer like that out if you hiked a while.
