I may give this creek another week to clear up some before I go again. It�ll also allow the muddy banks to dry out a little. Curl tail grubs in white or chartreuse work great during these conditions we are now experiencing, but I prefer a little more water clarity myself. Water clarity equals wider range of a strike zone, which means more hook ups. That�s how it calculates out for my style of fishing anyways. But I like to throw the small crappie jigs. Going down there and catching a few limits isn�t that far away now. We need a small break on the rain so this thing can settle down and the water clear up a little. I have a feeling that an angler is gonna have to take advantage of the good days and load up on these guys before it floods again. With everything in the water shed above being so full and saturated, it doesn�t take much to get this creek flowing strong and messing it up again.

Use to duck hunt there back when that creel was aph... never had much luck with the fishing there other than goo fish lol. Other spots though were pretty sweet. Caught a 14lb striper at the South end of the lake

Not sure why I am unable to post pictures but I'll keep trying to do so. You can see a drastic difference in the tree line with the first 8ft of the trees all brown. I saw a boat way north of the trail way bridge so I imagine there aren't many log jams present. I fully suspect that boat is the reason I stopped catching fish. Hoping to get out there again soon.

Made a short exploration trip to the Yegua at the Irwin bridge area with J-Moe this afternoon and found a few scattered here and there!
Suspect that Fishytx hit the nail on the head! Water needs to clear up a bit, and the banks need to dry up too! There was a 72 year old lady that slipped into the creek, and was lucky enough to have three guys nearby who were able to pull her out!

It was gorgeous on the Yegua today. Got there around 10am with about 10-12 cars at Irwin Bridge and the parking area. I walked downstream until I went past all the people. I probably went a mile or 2. Over the next 3.5 hours, I caught my first Yegua white bass limit standing in the same spot. At first it was males but then I must have stumbled upon one of those deep holes Fishytx talks about because it was solid females for about 8-10 casts in a row. Tough walk back hauling those fish! Every fish caught on a chartreuse jig. I will echo what others have mentioned about it being slick and being careful. I helped a guy get out after he had fallen in. I am not sure if someone can get up without help with those banks like they are. Thanks to Hook Line Sinker for the heads up about using the cleaning station at Nails. That was much better than cleaning fish in the backyard.

I'll try and get a picture up later tonight.

Based on what I have heard and read so far I'd say that any of the smaller creeks feeding Lake Somerville should hold whitebass right now. All it takes is a higher than normal lake that followed lots of rain that put a good flow in the usually small or dry creeks. Birch creek is a reel good choice for kayaking as it is a little harder to access from land. You can have most of Birch creek to yourself weekdays or with a few other boaters on the weekends. Birch creek is rather short and narrow but with several deep holes for the fish to stage before the spawn. I've done really well when conditions are like what we have now. Birch creek also holds good numbers of LMB and crappie in the lower section closer to the lake. I'm not sure of the current status of the state park (birch creek unit) so I don't know if you can take a short cut to the creek from the Yaupon camping area or not if you are yakin it..

Just an FYI, the state park has closed access to Cedar Creek via the state park due to unsafe conditions on the trail and the bank.

Thanks, I was going to try that on Monday. Stopped at the bridge and walked toward the lake last Tuesday with no luck.

We did well early catching a dozen or so by about 8am then the weather shifted and the fish shut down. One thing about this winter whitebass fishing in the creeks.. a good day almost always starts early.. The morning bite is a little more predictable but there is often a good afternoon/evening (4pm) or so for those who can't meet the sunrise...

I think the hardest lesson to learn about these winter whitebass is that the fish will be right where you are fishing but do not bite for most of the day. It seems to be about two hours of really hot action several times a week mostly in the early morning and then again in the late afternoon. Sometimes you simply just have to be there at the right time of the day.

Bring a few white rooster tails when you come. I've had much better luck with rooster tails than curly tail jigs the last couple of days. It has been the opposite up until then. I'm still working both of them though.
