Here's something I do that may be an idea for the rest. After I fillet my fish at home, I take the fish remains and freeze them. On trash day, I take them to the curb. But I also have an extra freezer in my shop to use. But man is that easy and a clean way to dispose the fish remains.

Between work, wife and life in general this is my First fish of the new year (whitebass run up the creeks of lake Somerville)..

As you can see in hook lines videos, the mouth of the creek at the lake is very shallow water. There is not enough water for these fish to stay in at the lake, so when they get up into this creek channel in the deeper holes, they stay in them until it's time to spawn. Deep water in this creek is a hole with 6 to 10 feet of water. There are many spots along this creek that have these deeper holes between Irwin and Newmans bottom. They are not very long, or wide, but deep enough to hold a bunch of fish. Farther you go downstream from Newmans bottom, the more you will see the wider and longer deep holes that are available for these whites to stack up in as they leave the lake.
Just typing and thinking about a white pulling on the other end of my rod has me scratching my head and trying to figure out if I want to go after a few today. But on the other hand, do I want to stay nice and clean by hooking onto the boat and going to the lake for some blacks? It�s just to much of a beautiful day to sit around the house. And I could sure use a good rod bend right about now.

The gate to Newman's Bottom was closed as of Friday. Go to Irwin Bridge and walk downstream.

Water is fine. Fishing was on fire Friday evening and Saturday morning until the cold front hit. It slowed down quite a bit but people were still finding a few in select spots. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. I'll probably be exploring one of the creeks tomorrow. I've been looking for good places to fly fish.

HLS video makes for a hard location choice. I'm mixed if I want to visit Nails or Irwin Bridge now.

I've never left nails empty but have always had to work for my fish. Yegua has always been my goto when run starts to kick in.

Either Nails or Yegua creek will be a good choice in the early morning.. I have to work so you-all will have to forge on without me

Newmans probably won't be open for a while longer since the culvert right before the parking lot has washed out again and there is still some damage to the trailway from the summer flooding. I find out more Monday when I call the state park manager.

I'll be out there. I'll probably start at Irwin and then probably end at Cedar.

If you are entering the state park (downstream Yegua @ Irwin bridge or Nails Creek @ CR 125) you need to register. Upstream from both locations is part of the WMA and is free access but you must wear hunter orange because the WMA are open to hunting year-round. It is easiest to just go into the Nails creek unit of the state park and register there at the office 8:30-4:30 everyday. Information about Newmans Bottom can be found there as well.
