You and me both... Here's the alternative formula that works the way he indicated:

Retail = $100
10% = $10

Retail + Tax = $108.25 minus 10% discount applied to retail = $98.25

If calculated 10% to sub total deducted before tax = $97.43

yep, They got you for a little tax. BP is too high anyway, shop there and buy elswhere.

Gotta throw out here that I'm a big Bass Pro fan. Great selection and there is no substitute for looking at and holding what you are considering buying. I'm OK with paying a little more since they use that money to sponsor many, many anglers I follow. Also nice that they let my bass club hold meetings there.
Not perfect, but the best out there, in my opinion.

I completely agree and SMH at the ones constantly bashing BPS probably too young to remember when we had very few choices for tackle. Of course online shopping will be cheaper same as Amazon in most cases they have less overhead since they do not have to manage and pay the costs associated with brick and mortar stores. I buy from all...BPS, Academy, Walmart, marinas, and online and not going to bash any of them.

Not really bashing BPS. Advising you to be alert that if making a major purchase like I did that you get the discount you expected. The day I made the purchase I was able to discuss the XI5 with two employees that knew what they were talking about. Spent probably 45 minutes with one picking his brain about the motor since he had one on his boat. That information plus the other research I had done sealed the deal for me. So the service received was great. Would point out that I have been back to the same store and made additional purchase. FYI, have had the boat out twice since the motor was installed and works as advertised. So for very pleased with the trolling motor.
