Good luck with that. Those fish really like to hug the bottom in the creeks. I know. Maybe in two months when they are on the go, darting here and there, but not any time really before this time frame. They are holding tight to the bottom and they will for at least the next six weeks or so. After the water starts to warm up and there a lot more up there, they will deplete their food sources enough to strike at one of these. It's just a thought that I have had for a few years but never have given it a try. Jigs are so much easier to use and they cost close to nothing, so losing one of those isnt so bad.

Don't try to discourage him from this mighty challenge Jarred. If anyone can figure it out, he can. Once he figures it out I can follow behind him with my fly rod and poppers

Do you catch them with top water flies? I've seen people catch Whites fly fishing in the San Gabriel, but not sure what type fly they were using.

Not to discourage anyone trying something new but spawning whitebass don't respond to topwater lures or flys like they will when feeding in schools back in the lake after the spawn. Surfacing schools of whitebass and hybrids are a real hoot on the fly but really hard to keep up with in a yak. I've managed only a couple of times where I lined up on huge schools near the shore in over twenty years of trying..

Hook Line N Sinker and J-Moe - it'd be worth it to have you teach us Somervile Anglers how to fish those back creeks on Somerville for those winter bank crappies. It'd be like a guided trip worth $50 a person or so that I'd be willing to take yu up on. I never been to the back side of Somerville and only went near Pecan Lake once.

Most of the crappie I've caught have been down below Newman's bottom. It has been closed for a while. I am having to bank fish around Irwin bridge. I've mainly been fishing for white bass. You are welcome to fish with me anytime, I would never accept money though. Hook Line & Sinker is definitely the man when it comes to crappie fishing the Yegua. He has lots of videos you can watch that might help you to locate some good areas. Most of those are below Newman's as well though. I have seen people catching a lot of small crappie under Irwin bridge this year.

I know it will be difficult to catch a few on top water bait due to their nature in the spawn mode, but still worth trying. I never have giving this a go, so there is always a first time and it wont take long to see if it will work or not. Even if it doesn't work, at least I could then say I gave it a shot. I even thought about putting a small jig with eight inches of line behind it. Maybe with that short of line it wont get so tangled up. Always looking for something new and exciting to do. But if any of this should work, look out little fishes, Im come for ya. But Im sure Ill stick to this jig thing, I know it works.

People normally use sinking flies while fly fishing. Something like this.

Ahhhh, I'll bet that's what they catch em' on in the San Gabriel. The fly fisherman seem to do really well there below the steps.

I tied up some chartreuse & white clousers with a 00 Colorado blade on them last year and caught a few in the Yegua. It's just so hard to fly fish in the Yegua. Especially now since all the sandbars are under water. Last year I could get down on that lower level of sand bars and cast.

There is no guessing on this one, it is what they use. Everyone of them. Different colors of course, but same set up.

Happy New Year everyone. Haven't been on since last year but it's good to be back. We took the boat up the Yegua all the way up past Newman's last weekend. Landed 17 BIG whites, 6 or 7 of which were females. Caught most just downstream from Newman's bridge on chartreuse twirl tail grub with pink head. It's looking like we've got an epic season ahead of us! We're going to hit'em again Saturday morning. I'll post the report...
