Same reason guys like fast cars, bikes or anything else. It's fun. It's useful in tournaments, and if you have to ask it's probably not for you.

Why worry about others and their toys?

I just do my own thing and try and let others be as they chose to be...

I think a bigger motor is good.... Doing 55 mph with my 150 I have it flat on the floor. With a 225 or 250 that's cruising. Which is better for the motor, I don't like going over 60 when I ride with another angler. 45 mph is good for me... But my next boat will have a 225 or 250 so I can cruise with a full tank and a heavy load at 55

I think it was Evinrude commercials that used to say if catching fish is only half of the fun...getting there is the other half!!

I run a 16' flat bottom that will touch 50mph with a tiller handle and hotfoot throttle. It's fun. Couple friends run go fast duck boats that will touch 70mph. That's running a fine line with a tiller handle. Only answer I know is because we can. However 70mph tournament boats and 40mph loaded duck boats are more time efficient.

Fast is good, fast through the boat wakes when it comes to lots of boats in a tournament is even better. Some boats run faster through boat wakes than others. So if you can run 68 through boats wakes that might be considered fast.

Thanks, Billy

Obviously when the wind blows, you can't travel that fast, and here in Texas it sure is nice when you can open 'er up! Our big motors do all the work, when you have a "Tournament load", just gettin' out of the hole, and climbing waves, and like a good horse, it's nice to let them run full out, once in while!

I'll sometimes run 70+ when lake conditions and safety allow. It is fun, after all!

As an interesting analysis that many never do, consider this: Years ago, my home water was Okeechobee, where the longest run to distant fishing spots was ~35 miles one way, probably longer than most non-pros typically encounter. If I ran that in ideal conditions I could average 70 and have a round trip time of 60 minutes. Now, what about an angler who can only average 60mph? Is it feasible for him to also make that run? The math says his round trip is 70 minutes - a full TEN MINUTES longer than the 70 mph competitor! While it is a difference, it's not as much as many think from a gut feel.

I believe that ability to safely navigate rough water (at some acceptable speed) is a much more useful feature of a boat than absolute top speed under ideal conditions. I always did seem to attract wind and fronts, LOL.

I run a Triton 21HP with a 250HP, the hull on this thing is awesome. Even on a fairly windy day, the thing runs fantastic on a full throttle. I don't do it that often, but its there when I need it!

I'm really disappointed. This thread has only reached 2 pages in 12hrs and not a single bragging post about one brand being faster than the other nor a screen shot of mph has been posted. You guys are letting me down. HAH

I actually stretch mine out every trip....even if it's just for a few minutes. I enjoy the trip to get to my spot and enjoy learning to drive it under the conditions that day. I typically cruise around 55 to 60'ish, however it will see over 70 each trip out.

Speed is nice first thing at take off on calm days. Reality is at 68mph at take off will usually not get you passed. If your making long runs it could mean 10 minutes more of fishing in a day.
