Yes you can see them and for ss the bigger the screen the better!! YES, bigger is better! And on that subject...would it be too crazy to have two units (let's say humminbird 1199's) with one set to Left Scan and the other set to Right Scan???

All these replies were most helpful. Ended up buying a Humminbird 999 on super sale at Bass Pro marked down to same price as 7, maps card on sale, warranty on sale. I was very happy :-) Does anyone have experience mounting/using a sidescan unit on a pontoon boat? Thanks.

I was very happy :-) Does anyone have experience mounting/using a sidescan unit on a pontoon boat? Thanks. You have issues with Side Imaging on a pontoon boat. First of all for SI to work correctly, it has to "see" left and right from the water's surface to past vertical on both sides. IF your tanks are long enough that the motor is forward of the rear of them, the SI pulse can "see" past the motor. Probably that is not the case. To get full function, you would have to attach the transducer to the motor mount in some fashion to get it submerged so it can "see" past the front of the motor mid section/lower unit and you may have to trim out some when scanning to get the clearance. The above is with a single SI transducer. There is an installation procedure that takes care of motor/hull blockage for "problem" craft. That is by using two SI transducers and a splitter cable that uses one side of one SI transducer and the other side of another SI transducer so "stuff" between them is not an issue. That splitter cable is the AS SILR Y cable. If you do that, just attach a SI transducer to the rear of each tank. That method is also used for craft with outdrives, tunnel hulls, and multi-engine outboards. Also deepV inboards with two thru-hull SI transducers.
