Not sure if that is the reason for the myth, but it sounds plausible

Pretty close to the story i just heard. Down in Costa Rica and when we booked our trip they told us specifically "no bananas." So their story went as the boats carried the bananas across the ocean they would fish along tbe way. When tbe ships were loaded with bananas the fishing would be terrible along with their luck. So it became superstitious to bring bananas on a boat. I was then told that bananas in large quantities release a chemical that the fish dont like.

Love the bananas, especially on those extremely hot days. Lots of potassium. Never take one on the boat but usually eat it on the way to the lake.

A surly old fishing guide named Johnny Procell freaked out on me one day years ago when we were getting skunked on Ray Hubbard. I pulled out my banana to eat and I thought he was going to stroke out. I ate the banana, threw the peel overboard, and he began to tell me all of these stories related to bananas and not catching fish. It was the biggest bunch of bull I've ever heard! But then, sure enough, we started catching fish and it ended up being one of the best days of the year.

Now I'm not saying I believe any of it to be true but I love bananas and I never, ever, bring a banana on board. I will gobble down a couple in the truck on the way to the lake though. wink

I often have a banana as part of a snack while fishing and still catch plenty.

I don't risk it..... I remember goin to fork when I was a kid with my dad and we got skunked all day. Then the weather turned and we were gettin dumped on with 20 mile and hour winds. I open the cooler and pulled out a whole deal of bananas and he was furious and says "your mom knows better! Unbelievable!" Ha no wonder were gettin skunked. Happened a few times offshore. If I think bout eatin a banana it's before I get on the boat. Believe that!

Johnny Procells The greatest fisherman I have ever fished with. ( save you comments on that my opinion )

Im red headed and have been told twice red heads should never get in someone else's boat without being ask to come aboard. So now I stand an wait until asked. Also I do best with fried chicken in the boat.

I always bring a banana with me when I fish. Trust me, I've had terrible, bad, good and incredible fishing trips with them on board. Bananas used to be found floating around ship wrecks in years past. Since bananas were the only thing left "alive", they were thought to be bad luck.

Absolutely ridiculous.

Be safe,

now; was it because I got rid of the banana, because I thought once you brought it on the boat the fishing "day" was shot, was it because we changed spots, was it because the banana thing is just hogwash. to this day I do not take a banana on the boat with me, but I do eat 2 of them every morning I am going fishing.

I remember that day well.
Banana in boat: Zero fish
After removal of banana: 38 fish
