Almost every guided fishing trip I been on from Chesapeake Bay to Beaver Lake was a bust, with the exception of charter trips in the gulf. The one trip, on Texoma where we tore them up, was over in less than 2hrs because we limited and the trip was agreed time on the water or a limit of fish. Every guide, regardless of success, expected to be paid, and was. I have never been offered a return discount, much less a free trip. Trips with no fish = no tip. Otherwise, I agreed to to pay "X" amount for a given amount of time on the water, and I honor my side.
Not that it doesn't suck to spend so much money to go fishing with a reputable guide and strike out. But it is "fishing" after all.
Not to be argumentative or anything. But you guides talking about the expenses involved, you overlook ancillary expenses of hiring a guide too. Time off work (depending on day scheduled), lodging, license fees (sometimes out of state), fuel, etc... For someone who doesn't do that type of thing much, or at all, there can be rain gear, and other costs as well. That $175-225 per person on your boat is only part of it. A guided trip can very often cost twice or more the price of actually being on your boat.
I have my own boat and have fished and hunted all my life. I understand how it goes, it's not "catching and killing".
If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space!

Spoken like a real man. Real men act like real men don't they.

The solution to all of this is. Either buy a boat, put a good fish finder on it and learn how to use it or bank fish. If a boat were bought you would need to wrap your mind around right hand steering and trailer backing. These thing are all backwards. Turn the pickup steering left trailer goes right. Turn boat steering wheel right motor turns left but boat goes right. Lawn chairs and stab in the ground rod holders are much cheaper along with easier to handle. Hang on the bank and be safe. Yes, cheaper and easier and a good option if you are good with sitting on a creek bank or dock with a line in the water and hoping a fish will drop by and like your bait Boating does involve an outlay of money, but you don't have to have a $60K bass boat to go out and catch fish. I know people who spend enough money in beer joints to pay for a decent fishing boat, but it all comes down to priorities and desires. I enjoy the time on the water as much as the fishing.

The response from psycho0819 and myself was directed to the author of the thread. I have a 20 footer and would bet psycho0819 has one too. We both use guides at will but don't whine when the fish won't bite. We just go tell our mom and she takes care of the problem.

TAKE A PHOTO HOME NOT THE FISH. CATCH AND RELEASE Set the hook first and ask questions later.
