99% of the time I use a #4 hook through the lips.

I do either and it totally depends on situation.
If sitting perfectly still like right over a pile or real shallow during spawn, I will hook thru back under dorsal.
If any movement occurs like in a creek or the boat moves while spider rigging, I will hook in eye socket behind eyes.
But then again, I am an amerateur.

Through the back when just fishing with a bobber and no weights. Through the lip when Kentucky Rigging. I read that just in front of the tail is good too so I will try it next time I use a minnow. (Which is hardly ever.)

Through the lips seems to work well. Ive done through the back and tail but they last longer on the lips for me.

A friend send me info on one called, hook line treader. While it was joke sending to me all of you may want to look at it. You can google it and they have both a web site and YouTube. The way its done may give some of you a ideal on a new way.

Though the eyes when I use them.
There are some days when the crappie will not touch a jig but go wild over minnows. Since I am not an expert nor a purist I try to give the crappie what they want when I fish.
While I prefer jigs it seems foolish to me not to use minnows if minnows are what the crappie want that day.
