If you can't understand how 40,000 in entries for 8 tournaments plus expenses to fish from florida to california to the great lakes can cost 100,000. I can't explain it to you. Starting in Orange, TX and finishing in Detroit, the Elites drove 7,699 miles. Starting in Kissimee, FL and finishing in La Plata, MD, Tour anglers drove 2,780 miles. That is a lot of extra miles! But at $4.00/ gallon and assuming you get 10mpg...that's an extra $2000 in truck fuel. James said an FLW angler can fish the Tour for $40,000-$43,000. That is about $3,000 in expenses per event + your entry fees. For the Elites, add in the $14,200 in additional entry fees ($40,000 rather than $25,800), then the $2000 for additional truck gas, then the additional $6000 in expenses (for the extra two events). Total is $65,200. Let's say 70K because they are Elite and maybe they super size their Big Mac meals or get the Queen bed instead of the double My statements are based on real math. If you can explain to me where the additional $30,000 is to bring it up to $100,000 using real math, then please do.

Only in the case of a couple of events do anglers travel directly to the next event. They may go home, other tournaments, promotional events, etc. Face it, expenses are discretionary depending on the individual angler. Regardless how you want to look at it, it's expensive to play the game.

Jt Kenney said in one of the circuit breaker shows that he spends 26k a year on fuel alone for boat and truck. I don't care enough to actually break down the math, but with the increase in entry fees, greater travel expenses and actually pre fishing(which most do I believe) 100 k seems real. Mr Biggs threw that number out but also stated that was without pre practice. Making the same trip twice, adds a great expense.

There is a lot of untruths in this thread. We drove 26000 miles from January yo June 15. Add in $100 a day in boat fuel during practices and actual tournaments. I am at Nate Wellman's home here in Newaygo, Michigan. He said he spends a minimum of $ 15000 on fuel and does not pre- practice all lakes. We just went fishing this morning and noticed his new Suburban has 46000 miles on it. Fuel is a HUGE cost. Next is housing. We traveled with three Elite Pros this year and housing ran about $500 a week ea. cheaper this way by renting a house and sharing expenses by three. Truth be told, it does cost close to a hundred grand a year in expenses. Some of this is shared by sponsors.

About the only real expense that can be controlled is housing and eating. There are still "top notch" guys that camp, whether it be in the back of their trucks (Brandon P. and I'm sure some others) or in their travel trailers (Gerald S., Randy Howell, etc). As Tubby states, $500 ea on a house rental could be cut way down if chosen to camp.

The $100k number is the relative total cost number. If you have $100k in Sponsors you can fish it for no cost providing you can spread the Sponsor dollars over the cost. For example how do you pay for gas, do you have Sponsor cash? You probably can nickel and dime it and get by on $80k. Sponsor dollar amounts are largely over estimated . Some get significant dollars, others get product.
Listen to the videos on the one post. The Pros say it's between $80K and $120K. $100K is about the average cost total cost. The actual out- of-pocket number we will never know.

Some Elite guys do it for $70K-ish, some get up to $100K-ish. Like anything in life, some people will choose to whittle down their costs to the lowest possible level, some can't or won't for their own reasons. Either way it's a huge annual nut just to play, and sponsors -- even the biggest ones -- don't and can't pay as much as some think.
You also have to be in the game for years to get significant sponsor dollars, so you better be an amazing stick or on your way there or you will flame out with lots of $$$ gone.
It's a tough road, and the guys who "make it" (can afford to keep doing it) have my undying respect -- as do those who try it but can't make it, and those who are good enough but don't want to or can't take the financial risk or time away from home (quite a few of those).
