Bought a lifetime license a decade ago, best money I've ever spent. If you have a young son or daughter who you plan to take fishing the rest of their lives, invest in one now before they shoot up again.

At less than $35.00 a year its a true bargain. Pennies a day to enjoy so many great fishing opportunities in this state that its amazing. I will happily pay that. TP&W is at the top if not the best wildlife agency in the country. No way in hell I am complaining over what little a license cost at all.

If you get a license now it will expire the 31st. If you do a year to date now it's $47 as opposed to $32 if you just wait until the 1st and that will last a year. So every year you do it early you pay $15 more a year to fish.I personally wait u too the 1st since I don't hunt the first day anyway. You can get super combo now at $68 and that covers it all.

Don't think that is how it works. I buy mine every year 2 weeks early and it expires the 31st.

https://tpwd.texas.gov/newsmedia/releases/?req=20110802a

"AUSTIN Current year Texas hunting and fishing licenses (except year-to-date fishing licenses) expire Aug. 31, and new licenses for 2011-2012 will go on sale Monday, Aug. 15."

You don't have to wait until the current expires to get the new one, they normally sell next year licenses about 2 weeks early.

Otherwise if buying a license mid year, yes year to date makes more sense sometimes, though truthfully, buying the year to date yearly costs you considerably more after year 1 if you buy one every year, so it's also pointless.

The only one that saves money over the yearly is truly the lifetime, which for $1800 super combo lifetime is only $36 a year if you hold the license for 50 years... smoking deal if you can manage not to die early... but then if you die at 35yr young, I guess it'd be nice to have not spent the time worrying about renewing, since your time was so limited. lizard

The license machine I use didn't update from 2015 holdings until today. My bad for the mis-information. As of last Monday Yall are correct.

Somewhat off topic, but does anyone know if carrying a copy of your fishing and drivers license is good enough for an on water check by the Game Warden?

As of last night, one COULD NOT get the $30 freshwater license at WalMart that expires 8/31 of 2016. The attendant was getting ready to ring me up for the few remaining days left on this cycle when I stopped him, said why in the heck would I want to pay $30 for a license I have in my pocket, one that has only days remaining.

I am not sure he even understood what I was saying.

What I could have done was spend $47 for an all waters license, $17 I won't need for this coming year, and the way that license works is that it is good for one year from the point you purchase it.

Why all licenses are not this way, in 2015, just speaks to the absolute indifference and I guess, passive aggressiveness, of most government agencies. It just cheats someone who wants to start fishing for the first time, say in June, out of a year's license fee for a few months of fishing.

Anyway, this reminds me of going over to one of the TPWD offices recently up off 121 and, knowing ahead of time, thank goodness, that they only would take cash and checks. NO CREDIT CARDS . . . in 2015. Nothing like missing a trend that now is around 50 years old and likely inconveniencing hundreds of customers over the course of a year at each office. Unless one looks it up on a computer, how would you know?

It is simply hard to fathom how far behind in technology, or the application of it, these fossilized bureaucracies can become.

I believe the WalMart guy finally determined that a "2016" license could be purchased one week in advance of the termination of the 2015 cycle. So, I'll either order on-line today or run back to WalMart or Academy.

*** I wonder how Academy was able to issue them??? I looked at the Walmart screen where he logged on and the 2016 option was clearly not there.

I was wondering the same thing? Haha. I will not get mine until mid September. I'm legal to fish till the end of this month and the first of next month I'll be fishing the BASS open in OK. I bought a license for OK... So good there. When I get back, I'll stop and buy another new one for TX. On a side note, this past summer I was asked by a warden to show a license. It was the first time EVER in my life. Glad I had not given up on buying them. Haha. He was writing tickets to a lot of folks at the ramp. Lol.
